List the top 5 or more water sources. Places to get water from.

We will use this for others who visit and ask this question.

Hrmm...are you talking in general,like right now - where to source and stockpile? Or where I'd look when SHTF? Because while some would be the same, some would surely be different.

Rivers

Lakes

Hot water tanks

Pool supply companies

The best source, in my opinion, is going to be mountain streams (of course, this is dependent on location) Most mountain streams are uncontaminated (because there's nothing living on top to contaminate it) and have a natural filter system (sand and moss.) This doesn't, of course, discount nasties like Giardia and Crypto, and you should always treat water from an unknown source. But at least this way you'll be starting with what is likely more pure than anything else you'll find.

IF I had my dream home it would be:

Well: The primary water source, we would use it everyday, and store some it 55gal incase we don't want to walk to the well.

River: This water can be boiled to sterilise it, as well as fishing in it.

Solar Still: The tertiary water source.

55Gal: Stored in the basement, and filled from the well.

Bottled Water: Last ditch emergency water, enough for 2 mounths incase of drought/infection/zombies.

Of course I don't have this home :( But it seems like a solid system to me

other people who appear well hydrated and unarmed. also, try to steal a fire truck if you can.

how about swimming pools/hot tubs (yes there are chemicals but knowing how to purify water is another thread)

back in boy scout wilderness training we were told you can wrap a large plastic bag, ie garbage bag, around a tree branch full of leaves because the average tree evaporates quite a bit of water in an average day. never tried it but its a thought.

Wrapping plastic around a tree limb of putting a bag over a bush works real well. I have done it. Pools are a great source, most are full of clorine (bleach) which is the main chemical used for purifying water, so it works pretty well.

Down here it would be rainwater tanks first.

Heavy restrictions are placed on using bore water in most places, mainly because of the way it reduces the water table. I know that's not always a bad thing, but bureaucrats don't operate on a case by case basis: They tend to make blanket rules that treat everyone as if they are idiots.

You guys left out the toilet tank jic.
And the fire hydrant. Even if the water pressure is zero, you can open the highest and lowest hydrants in the area/neighborhood. This will require a hydrant wrench or a fabricated one. Open lower hydrant slowly and collect the water in containers.
