In reference to swimming pools, if you have one. I installed a copper ion sanitization system on my pool. I did this for ease of maintenance, and reduced operating cost. You can get one for around $500. You still need to put a little chlorene in the pool, but it is a very small amount. A 40lb bucket of tablets will last me a whole year. I reduced my pool operating cost by around $500-$800 a year just in chemicals.
Now, in a survival situation, there is a very significant advantage to the system I installed. Chlorene evaporates and if you don't replace it constantly, the pool will very quickly turn into pea soup. But copper ions don't evaporate. Once treated, the pool will stay clear for a long time. I still keep 2 40lb buckets of chlorene in the supply chain, just in case. But I have 35,000 gallons of crystal clear water sitting right there that will stay that way for a long time. I am on county water, but I also have a well, but don't tell the county about the cross connect! I have been looking for an reasonably priced hand operated pump where I can drop a water hose into the well and manually pump water out. My water table is only about 25 feet down. Also, I bought a bulk pack of commercial coffee filters. They don't sanitize water, but are great for getting particulate matter out of water. Just put them in a large funnel and put the funnel in your container and pour through them. |

Springs
Grape Vines(the wild ones). From the spring thaw well into summer, you can cut the vines and wrap plastic around them so as to control where the dripping goes(into a container, of course.) The water may taste a little funny, but it won't kill you. Sometimes at work we will refill our water bottles with them when there's no other water available. Coal seams. Some of the cleanest, tastiest spring water you can find around here comes straight out of coal seams. regular waterways(streams/ponds/etc.) rainwater collection I know this makes 6, but you can collect/purify water from damp items with a hole in the ground, a tarp and a pan to collect the water. I can't explain it exactly, but there's a post somewhere on this site about it. I'll keep my Freedom, Guns and my Constitution, you keep the change.
Blind faith in ignorant leaders is NOT Patriotism. 1918 In the Wasatch National Forest of Utah, 504 sheep were killed by a single bolt of lightning. Sheep huddle in storms and the lightning bolt passed from one animal to another. |

We get a decent amount of rain and have a lot of clear running streams, but if need be, sea water.
I figure I'd not want to use fuel to distill it so I'd have to build a solar still with a closed system, which can be as simple as foil pans and plastic bags on a slope...but it'd be a lot of containers and plastic bags to supply needs for people. The good thing about this plan is it would work the best on cloudless days, when I'd be less likely to catch rain, and the same vessels as placed could be used to catch the rain if it does fall and fills the tops side of the bags!! -GrimOne-future -Fan Replacer post SHTF.

Here's MORE from a source I found quite a while back. There's a lot more info at the link, below:
![]() EMERGENCY DRINKING WATER SUPPLIES http://www.bae.ncsu.edu/programs/extension/publicat/wqwm/emergwatersuppl.html -SNIP- What if I don't have enough stored water, and run out when I need it? If supplies run low, never ration drinking water. Drink the amount you need today, and try to find more for tomorrow. You can minimize the amount of water your body needs by reducing your activity level. Hidden Water Sources in Your Home: If a disaster catches you without a big enough stored supply of clean water, you can use the water in your hot-water tank, pipes, and ice cubes. As a last resort, you can use water in the reservoir tank of your toilet (not the bowl). Do you know the location of your incoming water valve? You'll need to shut it off to stop contaminated water from entering your home if you hear reports of broken water or sewage lines, or a failure at the water treatment plant. To use the water in your pipes, shut off the incoming water valve. Let air into the plumbing by turning on the faucet in your house at the highest level. A small amount of water will trickle out. Then obtain water from the lowest faucet in the house. To use the water in your hot-water tank, be sure that plumbing fixtures and the water heater are not submerged by flood. Turn the electricity or gas off, and turn off the water intake valve. Start the water flowing by opening the drain at the bottom of the tank and turning on a hot-water faucet. Do not turn on the gas or electricity when the tank is empty. Waterbeds hold up to 400 gallons of water, but some water beds contain toxic chemicals that are not fully removed by purifiers. If used as an emergency water resource, drain it yearly and refill it with fresh water containing two (2) ounces (1/4 cup) of bleach per 120 gallons of water. Do not add algicides or other additives (with the exception of chlorine bleach) if this water is to be used as a water reserve. Before use, water should be boiled. Some time ago, I was pondering the possibility of using old style waterbeds as a water bladder for long term storage. The possibilities might include odd basement or crawlspace areas, since the waterbed would conform to the space that it was confined in. Yes, if you sealed it up with Clorox added, it should stay sterile for many months.

Not for drinking, but for watering the garden, I hooked up the drain hose on the washing machine to run outside into a 55 gallon drum. All the water from wash and rinse cycles is used to water plants and flowers. Saves on my city water bill.
