do you have a container system with your 5 gallon jugs? like the upside down water machine that the bottles go into? Ours we have, we havent used since we moved here 2 years ago, but will work even without the plug plugged in. You can get water from it, but it wont be cold.

i've got 80 5 gal bottles (400 gal) in my preps and another 10 in the house for use. those are rotated out and refilled with purified water continually. the stored water is stabilized to last at least 10 years.

it's not what i'm using, it's how it's processed. first the bottles are sterilized, then the water passes through a 10:1 bypass reverse osmosis (for every gallon that gets through, 10 are dumped) that is capable of making raw sewage potable. next ozone is added to kill anything that may have gotten through the RO then after it's bottled the bottles are exposed to UV light (it's a triple redundant system). once sealed and so treated the water is guarranteed to remain pathogen free for up to 10 years even if left in sunlight or exposed to extremes of temperature (in truth, under normal conditions, the water will remain drinkable indefinately).

look around your area for companies providing bottled water for water coolers, this purification method is fairly standard in the industry. just be sure you order purified water and not spring water, which has no such requirements. distilled is ok for storage water also but distillation removes the trace minerals the body needs for good health. purified is designed to leave those in.

My local Walmart has a water refill station where you can bring your own bottles and refill by the gallon and they have a similar reverse osmosis and UV light setup. I doubt it is quite as thorough as the above mentioned set-up, but probably worth taking a look at. Check with your Walmart to see if they offer this service.

welcome to the board morchaos. those walmart water kiosks really don't do much. real RO requires most of the water to be flushed down the drain and take several minutes to produce each gallon. most people don't want to wait and walmart doesn't like to waste water they have to pay for so they usually only use a 2:1 bypass at the most, which allows most of the fine contaminants through. they're not much better than drinking city water but at a much higher price. your best bet is to look for a bottler who uses a high bypass system.

So these max-level estimates are if you are expending no energy and no sweat, right? What if you are forced to walk or build a structure or something? I'm sure that'd kick your ass real quick in 130 F !! Any idea on how that'd affect the original calculations?

Shelter during the heat of the day, work early in the morning and in the evening. As far as affecting the original calculations, that is going to vary a good bit, but figure at the very least doubling water intake.

And never work alone in the heat...if you become disoriented, you 'll need someone there to save your bacon.

i've been horendously dehydrated once when i was sick, bird flu i think, and i didn't eat for a week and a half and didn't drink any more then a half cup of gingerale a day. i was litterally halucinating, could barely walk and had trouble talking. i actually got hospitalized for 3 days because of dehydration and my bizarre lasting 3 heart beats that they still can't explain. so in hind sight, drink extra when sick, and push food even if it comes right back up.
