The food stamp program, part of the Department of Agriculture, is pleased to be distributing the greatest amount of food stamps ever. Meanwhile, the Park Service, also part of the Department of Agriculture, asks us to "Please Do Not Feed the Animals" because the animals may grow dependent and not learn to take care of themselves.

Not only is the battle of the 'nines' significant in judging filtration of water-born agents and contaminants, when it comes to water purifying/decontaminating methods/additives the time of contact must also be taken into account. The fast filtration and fast purifiers are much more likely to allow a higher percentage of agents to remain untreated.
For SHTF water treatment, I recommend Pool Shock (60%+ Calcium Hypochlorite) (powder form) in small amounts (high dilution) to treat either before or after filtration and sit after thorough mixture at least over night. If there is still a strong chlorine smell, the water container should be left open for another 24 hours and the chlorine will dissipate. I have decided to stick with love. There is a member over on TB2K who posted a fact regarding getting rid of chlorine
smell/taste by bonding immediately with (Fruit Fresh) a pinch of citric acid or ascorbic acid, which converts the chlorine into a harmless salt and removes the taste. PM me if you wish to know her screen name, I am not comfortable placing that info in the clear publicly. “ Ever sift sand through a screen? ... We Bene Gesserit sift people to find the humans. ”

I purchased two containers of Calcium Hypochlorite. Be careful if you have higher iron content than normal (usually discolors porcelain, etc) because according to the State water testing folks, Calcium Hypochlorite can cause the iron or ferrite to oxidize. I purchased mine on eBay at a good price. Each container was enough to treat 10,000 gallons--I figure enough for my small retreat community of 8 families.

I'm stocking up on the old (cheap) stand by, Pool Shock. I got it from Wally World, but any swimming pool suppliers will have it.
I got super lucky last summer when my son and his crowd moved into a new house. The folks across the street from their new place were throwing out their old swimming pool filter housing. This puppy has 3 or 4 inlets on top and as many on the bottom. If needed it will make a good charcoal / sand filter housing. I'm looking for a sale at Lowe's or some other big box store on play sand. Charcoal I'll get from Sam's Club, BUT I also know how to make charcoal and I've got plenty of hardwoods around my place. The sand can be rinsed and if needed it can be boiled clean, then re-used. Water that has been filtered, chlorinated and or boiled should ensure that we can drink the water. I have a creek running through my property too, so that, along with my 'stuff' and knowledge of water chemistry from running co-gens will really help with keeping water needs met.
