No matter how valuable they might be to you or your cause - are you suggesting that you will have to kidnap them to save them?

If'n they won't respond to honest heart to heart talk, why think they will come later? and if they do, how will you be able to depend on them?

Do I misunderstand your question?

Good luck, sounds like you will need it.

Sit down and think very hard about what your proposing first. What do they or did they do for a living? What are their hobbies? Would they be willing to be a productive part of your group helping do day to day things to keep the homestead going or will they balk and keep saying the feral government will be coming to help everyone? The family members I am choosing to let fend for themselves are managers and secretaries who's hobbies are pawn shopping, antique store shopping and going to car shows. They have no valuable skills, will not touch wild game nor anything grown in a garden. If it doesn't come from the supermarket it's inedible. They will be more of a problem to mine and my wife survival than they're worth. Analyze them carefully so you don't end up in a situation your going to regret or will put you your wife and kids in a dangerous situation with regards to protection or food supplies. Your better off surviving and regretting than dying because you felt responsible for their welfare.

My family is spread out in the 3 West Coast states.

Sister close to Canadian boarder, they cross over all the time to go skiing, so they can bug out north if need be. Her husband doesn't believe in guns and said he couldn't shoot anybody. He's not welcome at my place in a SHTF situation, he'll be dead weight.
Other sister is Mormon and lives on an island, her husband believes in guns, hunting and self defense. They would take my mom in and are set up pretty well.
Brother is in SF Bay area. He is welcome at my house if he can get here. I won't go there.

My wife's family are Democrates. Her brother doesn't work, and makes the government take care of him. He laughs at my ideas of preparedness. Not welcome at my house. I would go and get my wife's mom and granddad if need be. They think I am smart with my preparedness even if they are democrates.

All I really have is my prep buddy who has a small farm 30 miles away which I have been putting some sweat equity into. We are of like mines and are welcome at each others place.

So if a bad situation occurs, I would not be able to defend what I have, so I would probably have to bug out. Going through the pickup and rebuilding the flatbed trailer for just in case. I would even get a boxed truck to haul what I have, besides food, shelter, security items, I have a shop full of tools that would be needed in the aftermath of SHTF wouldn't want to leave them for the scavengers.

I just hope that where I am at it will not get bad and I won't have to worry about bugging out.

Pray for the best and plan for the worst.

As far as what these people would benefit me in practical terms is:
Father and Father-in-law: Both avid hunters. Father also a trapper. Father-in-law is McGuyver with all things it seems, expert welder, machinist, fabricator, etc etc.
Mother and Mother-in-law : Mother has gardening and canning knowledge.Mother-in-law has BSN and MSN (nursing) and is a case manager with experience in the ER.
Brother-in-law: Mechanic.Owns his own garage and every tool known to man. Avid hunter
I could go on.But point is they WOULD be able to asist. However, the risk would be to great for a rescue. That said, I will be drawing up plans as stated before for them to get to me if possible.I will be making said quite clear to them that the cavalry will not be coming if shtf; but if they want and are willing, they can come to me. :pop:

It's your best option. Personally I have problems with giving out maps to an location. But I'm extremely paranoid about opsec, Ex military. I would consider the trapping to be the greatest resource in an EOTWAWKI situation.

Gardening knowledge would help canning in a bad sit is a short term option. Once the lids go it goes.

Hunting skills, depends. I know a lot of "avid hunters" that get lost and almost starve in any kind of wild area. I've had to rescue too many of them.

Welding, you need power or tanks. They run out fast. Can he forge weld?

Nurses, won't even touch that one. I'm a retired nurse with ER,ICU,CCU, Burn and trauma unit experience. The paramedic, wilderness medic, and combat medic classes taught a LOT more useful hands on knowledge.

Also consider ages and medical/physical condition.

It's just things to think of. Also consider the play that some form of societal collapse is getting on the airwaves right now. My 73 year old mother is starting to believe in it and she used to laugh at me. But since dad died last fall she is fatalistic about it.

She says she has lived her life and she is just waiting to die anyway.

Totally agree with your advice HP: A serious heart to heart with those family members that you would consider offering shelter to.
Our daughters live at home now, but when the time comes for them to spread their wings and make their own homes, they will always be welcome.
My sister and BIL would be welcome, despite the fact that they are not preppers by any means, but they would have to come under their own steam. Likewise my brother, however he is more prep minded and has a remote BOL to which we can go to if need be.
When in doubt, apply rule ·223 or ·308 -- unless you have a more preferred calibre.

Get them prepared to come to you.
List of needed things..
GPS
Water and food in vehicle
good vehicle
Set up for them a Good BOB and place in it the basics.
arms..
1 lever action rifle, caliber not important, and 100-200 rounds. can be had cheap at a pawn shop. preferable pistol caliber?
1 handgun, with 2-300 rounds, also can be had cheap.
and a scatter gun. doesnt matter what guage, action or whatever, only 100 rounds really needed.
this will get them to you, where you have what's needed and have more arms.

I'm glad this post is still getting responses. I beleive there a two trains of thought on this and subsets.
SOme say. You didn't prep. I warned ya. Your on your own.
Some say. You didn't prep. I warned ya. But your family. So, I'll still help you.

The subset's are these.
You didn't prep. I warned ya. Your on your own.( AT SHTF onset). After time or incidences.SOme may want to see what happened with their fam or friends.

You didn't prep I warned ya.Your on your own.I planned on trying to help ya. But, not anymore. Not now.( After time or incidendences).

For ME. My essential family now have written plans provided by me. The plans include how to get to me.WHat to bring. Things they should get NOW. It also has contingencies within the plan.
