Hey, I had an idea today. I bought a couple wooden boxes at a flea market this spring, not knowing what they could be used for. They are 32" L x 10 1/2" W x 5 1/2" deep, inside measurements. They are marked on the lids: FUZES, DETONATING UN 0408. They have rope handles on each end, and a simple latch to hold them closed. For a few dollars, I couldn't pass them up in this condition.

Today, I was thinking about my growing cache of non-perishable food, and where to store it. The boxes fit the bill perfectly. I've just got to figure out how to insect/bug-proof them without taking too much space or weight. Once they are filled, they will fit easily into the back of my jeep cherokee.

For those of us without a BO location, this is something to think about. If you set up boxes in your residence, you have multiple options. When TSHTF, you can stand your ground, if possible. You can bug out in a vehicle, and throw these in. No need to gather anything up, it's just like a BOB. Grab and growl. Or, if there is no alternative, you can keep them in your safe location at your residence, bug out, and perhaps retrieve them later.

Just one of my ideas, worth thinking about. Those of us who have a BO location could use them to secure food from pests, and those of us without could use them as easy means of transport. I attatched a very poor photo of them, so you could see for yourself. It fits standard food cans, and a normal size can of shortening laid on it's side.

Maybe some fiberglass cloth, and resin on the inside or just some fiberglass resin on the outside might do the trick.

Thanks Johnny. I happen to have a tub of Bondo-hair I bought for another forgotten project(A car I sold before doing it). I'll grab the rubber gloves and play with it, let you know how it works.

Update: 3 pairs of rubber gloves, a tub of Bondo-Hair, a putty knife and a box. It doesn't adhere remarkably well, but it does adhere. I'll have to go back through and do a little more, but I think it should hold water when I'm done. I'm also going to go down to the hardware store and buy some rubber door seal for the lid...and I think that should do it. I'll post a pic when i get the fiberglass done and sanded. I wonder if mice will chew that stuff?

I had purchased some of these boxes in about 1997, took them apart, refit them with some strengthening, and then used polyurethane and wood satin to preserve them after sanding them down. They were used to carry utensils for camping and have proven to be very dependable and sturdy (I use them still). I will try and get some pictures and post of them sometime this week.

I would glue tin foil to them or sheets of aluminium or copper. While I think once you fill them, it will take two to move them, a nice wooden box is always handy.

If a rat will chew through PVC pipe, what good is a plastic bag? At this point...the 'glass is done. it needs the high spots sanded down and tested for seal....I think scent is the key to preservation. Bears are thick around here, and if they don't smell food, they won't see need to hang around or get in to stuff. I'm taking the same theory with mice and insects. Don't know if it will work...time will tell

I have seen these boxes used as planters...veggies, herbs, etc. They work great lined or un-lined. I would bet that they would last indefinitely, if they were polyurethaned and lined with heavy mil plastic
