With out fire you could not cook or keep warm.

With out shelter you could not keep dry or fairly warm.

So the question is what in a SURVIVAL situation is more important to you to have

Fire ? OR Shelter ?

To me, it's fire, but then it all depends on what kind of weather your in. Normally in weather that you can survive in with just the clothes you have on, you will need to boil water, cook, make tools, see at night, make chemicals, smoke dry foods, etc.
Yet once again it all depends, if it's cold and damp you need shelter. Almost a chicken and an egg kind of thing.

this is a wierd question. The way I look at it. If I need the shelter to stay dry then its probably going to rain and I wouldnt be too successful with a fire anyway. If I had a shelter I could build it to protect a fire if necessary. My choice is shelter. I can go days without eating, without cooked food or I can eat roots, plants, berries, and sitll function well. Being dry is something that is taken for granted a lot. Being hungry is one thing but if your hungry and wet MISERABLE.
War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

My vote is shelter first then fire.
If I am hunkering down I will need shelter. I will have water and rations with me so I won't need fire to cook or boil water at first.

Originally I was thinking fire, nothing worse than being cold wet. But I have a tarp attached to my LBV...
Settled shelter first :D

Man....I hate this question. Makes you think though. A lot would depend on the circumstances, weather, etc. I think last time this came up I answered fire because of the fact that you could not cook, stay warm, or dry off without it...... but if everything was wet there would be low chance of a fire. And what if you were trying to stay under the radar? Then fire is risky. I asked the wife her opinion and she said it would have to be a case by case basis lol (no help).

I guess I'll say shelter......going camping in the mountains around here we always set up the tents first, then gather wood and get a fire going so.

I say fire. There were hundreds of Mountain Men trekking the Rockies long before I came along and they spent weeks with nothing but a Buffalo skin robe to keep warm with but the fire was a necessity. If you build a shelter it will leak somewhere which puts you into hypothermia danger but if you have a big fire going and it rains you can at least keep the core temp up even if you are wet. The only time I'd omit the fire is if I was being pursued then it would become a marker of where I am/was.
