This is a silly video, but it makes me wonder perhaps the screen could be modified for a solar cooker? I run across these tv's sometimes. Next time instead of ignoring it, I'll take it and make a cooker. I bet you could boil a can of soup under 3 minutes!

 I'm finally starting my search for old rear projection TVs. I should be able to find a bunch for free on Craigslist. These lenses will make the solar light VERY bright...protect your eyes!

Excellent idea, they should store pretty easy once they are broken down as well. I think I will try to get a few.

I love those fersnel lenses and yes they work that good at starting a fire.
I have a small one in my wallet too. The big ones can be used by using a mirror to reflect the suns engery on the bottom of a cast iron pan and it works as good as a stove cook top. Oh I would strongly suggest that you have eye protection because that spot is very bright and can hurt your eyes. Fun to play with that is for sure! Kevin |

Wow Kev I didnt even consider using a mirror, This totally fits in my budget our Tv is on the fritz and it happens to be just like it. 2 birds get a baddass Death Ray and get rid of the zombie inducing boob toob.

Make a cover for your lens, they burn BRICK, these can easily start a fire if untended and pointing at the wrong thing

Hmmmmm I wonder if it could be made targetable and used to blind enemy combatants or even as some sort of Anti-Missile defense? Just ya know wonderin'. Any onehere an engineer?

That would take serious optics and the physics of focus over long distance. That problem was solved with lasers. Bottom line is the focal distance is too short....a couple of feet.
