My first cycle was a 69'Honda CT70cc.It was set up where top speed in high range was 45mph.With a change of sprockets in high range it would do between 55-60mph on the pavement, and still handle most off road in low range. It had a one pint tank and a half pint reserve, and on the trails would run 100miles on average.Above all as dorky as it looked the bike was damn tough. It's still to this day being handed down in my family for kids to ride as a starter bike.Matt
I want to die in my sleep just like my Grandpa, not yelling and screaming like the passengers in his car. ""I'm the one you go to when something absolutely has to go"Kaaboommm"!!!!""

The XR series from Honda is an excellent bike, I'd love to have one. The YZ 500 is suicide on wheels

Not bad for $60 and an additional 1.3gal. I'd have a total cruising range of 360 miles. The YZ500 was a 1979, White Bros swing arm, mono shock and front forks with a 5gal desert tank. I have 8 titanium pins in my shoulder because of it and the stupidity of youth. My wife refuses to ride the dirtbike, her hands aren't large enough and strong enough to work the clutch but she will occasionally ride the Kitty, she has a really hard time with it tho because of it's sheer size. Sitting next to another brand of ATV with comparable cc's it makes the other look like a toy because it sits up so high which is nice for the ground clearance but makes it a real PITA on the off camber stuff because of the high CG.

Dear Friends who were WWII survivors, who excaped post-War Communist-held Eastern Germany told my family (In the 60s) that the Ideal SHTF vehicle is very nearly what is posted above - a Moped or motorized Bicycle. It has to be light enough that you can lift it over closed fences, haul it into where you are hiding (so it doesn't get stolen), get really good gas mileage, carry two normal sized people, and go 25 mph or so. Motorized Bicycle is great when pedaled, not so fast under power. a Moped is faster under power and more of a pain with pedal power. Either can go a real long ways with poor quantity and quality gasoline. Breaker points ignition is EMP Proof, simple to diagnose/maintain/operate. Shave the heads and it could run on Alcohol. Two stroke needs little maint. He fed it by the few drips from shut down fuelpump nozzles - to the next station...etc. Small and light enough to carry in or on your primary BOV. Makes a lot of sense to me.

To me the motorcycle or dirt bike would be my first when needing to get to my bug out location most are extremely fast. dirt bike will allow you to go in the woods etc. unless your going to carry something to get where you need to go choose dirt bike + its decent on fuel

My take on it is it's just like my pickup. My truck is almost 8' wide and 23' long it will only go certain places but will carry an immense amount to cargo. A motorcycle, depending upon weight will go many places but will not offer the protection a vehicle can nor carry the load a vehicle can. It is something that I will use in conjunction with my pickup, ATV and snowmobile. None of them can do it all but together they make a very formidable force. I have been considering a trailer for my mtn bike and adapting it to the XR200 also, that way I could "carry" about 200lbs of additional cargo while somewhat maintaining the maneuverability of the dirt bike.

I'm getting a Suzuki DR-650se soon. Fast, reliable, easy to work on,good mpg's. You can get a 6.8 gallon tank for it as well as carrying gas cans side saddle.

for a motorcycle I would really really have to suggest the Kawasaki KLR 650. I have one have ridden it from CT to everywhere from New Mexico to Labrador. It's carburetor-ed with minimal electronics, made for on-road and off road riding............I could go on and on about my KLR I love it!!!!!!!. If anyone is interested i'll upload some pics of my KLR with it's packed up with a months worth of gear and give some more info... let me know
