I picked up 3 purification/filtering straws at Academy for $9.98 each and have tested them all by drinking creek water through them. I didn't get sick, so I guess they perform as advertised. I can't remember the name right off, but it started with "Aqua".

i have the straw in my fannypack/mini BOB and a katadyn pocket filter in my main bag.
