Go with a good quality AK in 7.62x39, lots of firepower good to 300 yards and robust as hell.

I even bought a few thousand rounds of .22LR and I don't even own one, it is strictly for barter.

Smart thinking Sarge
When in doubt, apply rule ·223 or ·308 -- unless you have a more preferred calibre.

Stocking up on common ammo, even if you dont own a gun chambered for it, is something people have called me crazy for for some time now. So i am glad someone else brought it up. I finally got another .22 after a year of not having one, but i kept a whole lot of .22 ammo of all varieties. (LR, short, magnum, colibri) I also have many AK and other milsurp rifle parts, for guns i dont own.

My main "battle" weapon is a Norinco SKS. I keep a web belt with 240 stripper clipped rounds AT THE READY.
My main side arm is my Star 9mm. 9+1 always loaded, with 2 extra mags on my web belt.
My MAIN SURVIVAL GUN (in other words, the gun i will never ever ever ever give up because ammo is cheap, light, and very suitable for game) is a Heritage Arms six shooter. It shoots every kind of .22 rimfire ammo there is. I chose this due to its accuracy, acceptance of a variety of ammo, and will fit in my bug out bag easily. Some people are very surprised what kind of devistation a good high-end .22WMR round will do

compared to most preppers i know, i am very short on ammo, except .22. I buy about 200 rounds of 7.62 every 2 weeks or so. the stockpile grows fast.

rodney762,
Is that Star 9mm a "BM"? I had one up until about a year ago. Really nice nickle plated one. Problem was it sucked ass for accuracy. How is yours? I recently purchased a Rock River LAR15 in 5.56 and 1500 rounds of ammo for it. I got 1300 rounds of 7.62x39 for my SKS. I bought 2 Glocks recently also in 9mm and .40 cal. About 500 rounds for each. I do have 2 Savage hunting rifles in model 110. One is a 7mm Magnum with about 200 rounds and the other is a .270 with about 240 rounds. Also got a couple Winchester shotguns. One 12 ga. for hunting and a 12 ga. for home defense. Everyone in my family has been taught how to use every gun I own. If a intruder enters, they know what to do. If the shtf, they all know what to grab first.

Lowdown3 wrote:Have you put more than a few thousand rounds through the AR? Not trying to start any crap, but I've owned 2 and BOTH crapped out after a few thousand rounds. By that I mean catastrophic jams. I had went through the 2nd time and took all the advice of all the "experts" as to mags, ammo, upgrades, etc. FWIW, I've also witnessed two dozen or more of these weapons goes down at classes and during hard field use.
After the 2nd one failed in the same manner the first one did (and no I'm not talking about a feed jam or EASY jams) I sold it and said never again.
I realize a lot of folks love them and will tell you "I've never had any problems with mine" but there are a lot of locker queens out there. More than that, there's a lot of guys that go and shoot 200 rounds once a year, clean it for three days afterwards and declare it "reliable", NONE of which I'm talking about. Please, everyone that is planning on relying on an AR, please please please also carry a handgun. It will likely save your life.

Again, not looking to start a debate, who's got the better kung fu or any BS like that, just stating my experiences with this rifle and offering caution to help a fellow patriot.

Thanks for the laugh. I've forwarded this to a few members of our 'club' who routinely put our AR's through more punishment then you will in a lifetime. Anyone who knows AR's knows about there reliablity if you just do the basic matainance. I'll admit, I wasn't going to even respond to your post as is completely obvious what your intension is. BUT I can't let this kind of mis-information go unchecked as there are lots of (new to the hobby) people looking for a reliable go to SHTF weapon and it really doesn't get much better then the weapon MOST law inforcement and the U.S. military go to. And that's the AR. BTW, You say you've owned 2, and they "crapped out" after a few thousand rounds? Well, IF you did have 2 and they 'crapped out' after a few thousand rounds it's because you obviously don't know what your doing. If they worked fine, then suddenly DON'T then you are doing something wrong. Sorry, plain and simply. Your right, lots of 'folks' love them, FOR A REASON.
