I picked on of these up because for 10 bucks, i rather have it than not. Given its a typical ceramic/ carbon element, its only good for a bit. I imagine you can backflush it and clean it somewhat. They claim its good for 20 gallons, but im betting its actually good for far more than that. I'd say it should be good as long as you can still suck water down it - because the ceramic really isnt bad until its 100% clogged.
Anyhow, if you have nothing, pick one of these up.

Those are cool, My dad just picked one up for a fanny pack he has,I want one too. Seems like a great Idea.
