Well it's a crappy rainy day here. Fresh rain over a foot of ice.
Carol got me a new "Food Saver vacum packer " for Christmas.
Am going to go through the pantry and see what I can put together for a single , well balanced meal in a sealed bag.
Anyone else tried this, any idea's ?

Do I presume that you want to prepare meals that don't require freezing? If so, this is probably not what you're for, however my mother, who lived alone, usually cooked meals of two or three servings and placed the extra servings in containers which she froze. After she died we found about 20 meals, prepared some 6 - 8 months before, in her freezer. All were quite good, though if she had vacuum packed them instead of using containers, they would have lasted much much longer.
(Chi wouldn't use them because every time she thought about them, it would bring on the tears: She'd gotten pretty close to her Aussie mum.) When in doubt, apply rule ·223 or ·308 -- unless you have a more preferred calibre.

Bid: Your right, I'm looking for food stuffs that don't need refridgeration.
Years ago I worked night shift at a county hospital. Thats when I got my first seal a meal unit. Wasn't a vacum packer. Use to cook big pots of my favorites and seal up 2 cup servings and freeze. At night we were on minimum staffing so we couldn't leave for meals, so about 3AM a big bowl of whatever via the micro wave was sure a lot better than a cold sandwich. |

Well I got as far as getting the little bag filled and vacum packed, to load into a larger bag for the MRE's.
1 st. one has packaged tuna, mayo and relish packs ( I lifted a couple of handfulls at the deli). A small pack of dehydrated onions, 2 rice cakes. 2 packs of instant coffee and sugar, a couple of packs of soft candy, 2 vitamin tabs, plastic spork and a paper bowl, 1 container of pre-sweeten crystal- lite. #2 main dish is 5 oz. beef jerky and about the same remaining items. ................ |

What? No vegemite? Oh, the horror!
Many motels and fast food outlets down here have those individual serve packs of butter, marmalade, strawberry and apricot jam, (and of course vegemite), which are also very convenient for picnics and camping/bivouacs. Our section's crew room on the base has a large carton of them in the fridge, and they never seem to run out. Somehow we seem to have accumulated quite a few at home too. Actually I see a lot of merit in your idea Dennis, so Erika and I are looking at making up similar bags that we can use. Her idea is to make up a number of bags labelled 'Breakfast', 'Lunch' and 'Dinner'. The bag would also be used to hold any garbage left after a meal, to be disposed of later. (That way nobody would know where we have been, or what our situation is regarding food supplies.) If carrying too much is a problem, we'd revert to the 'burn, bash and bury deeply' sytem of rubish disposal. When in doubt, apply rule ·223 or ·308 -- unless you have a more preferred calibre.

Bid : Vegemite ? Don't have a clue.
There's a hotel in Anchorage that we stay that has a fix your own breakfast bar. Amoung the goodie's they have are nice sealed pac's of peanutbutter, which several have found a home in a kitchen drawer here. My diet doesn't vary enough to call something breakfast or lunch. I really love this new "food-saver" Carol got me. The daugther-in-law came by with a load of meat and we (me) cut and wraped it with the food saver. I think if I'm in the field the best way to get rid of the bags is a small camp fire. .......Dennis.. I googled vegemite here's what I found. Just talked it over with the "boss" and had an idea. We are a family of three, so take a cup of rice with salt and seasoning and seal it. Now take a cup of beans and seasonings and seal it. Now take a pack of kool-aid with sugar and seal it. Put it all in a bigger bag and seal it. now you have a meal for three, ready and waiting. Just add water and boil. Meals ready to cook.
Most of us keep our beans and rice in big containers and I am just thinking along the lines of this concept. I will start making individual and family meals-ready-to-eat and meals-ready-t-cook and sealing them starting this week. Thanks for getting my gears turning. |
