Recent events in Rep. of Geogia prompted me to check some of my gear, found I had used and forgot to replace 1 radio and simplex repeater, promptly done ... In grab and go com's box that is "EMP resistant" ( call it that because it's debateable how EMP proof anything would be in a real close ) is: 1 DJ 580 dual band ham radio, 2 DJ 191 2 meter ham radio, 2 CB walkie talkies, 1 simplex repeater, 1 portable "police" scanner, 1 grundig PR100 AM/FM/SW ...note all work off AA batteries .... for bug in I've also hardened 1 Alinco DX 70 ham radio and an XP compatable laptop computer, question to group re: TV after EMP think any stations still able to broadcast ? would TV be worthwhile to add to EMP resistant gear ?

I really doubt they could with the new digital stations, it is possible that some of their equipment for analog that will be stored away will still function. After that they still have to have someone willing to put it back on the air. You may be able to pick up other countries that are not digital though.

Yes, it would be a good idea to have a TV set EMP-proofed, and a video/DVD player, especially if you have a range of how-to instructional tapes and DVDs. Same goes for a backup hard drive unit or memory sticks where you may have stored such information.
I doubt very much that DVDs would be damaged by an EMP event as they have their contents physically burned onto the playing surface, however video tapes could be at risk and so should also be protected.
When in doubt, apply rule ·223 or ·308 -- unless you have a more preferred calibre.

Is your repeater a store and forward style? I use a crossband wich works excellent around here.

I think this will be the next type of attack on us is a small if not a big EMP. This will bring us to our knees in a hurry. I say if your saving things on memory sticks print it off for a hard copy if you can. The DVDs watch them and try to learn them the best you can as that will be history if an EMP hits.

I have been talking about this the last few years with friends and family and they just look at me like im crazy but I keep telling them you wont have heat, water, food or anything else that makes life easy we will be living like its 1776 all over again.

Can you tell me the best way to harden / proof something? :new:

No Quarter :
Welcome to the forums. Question is what do you wish to protect from EMP. There's a lot of considerations from small to big....

Is everything perminently fried after you are in an EMP (electric magnetic pulse)? I thought that some things would come back when the pulse was over. Also, how wide spread over an area would an EMP be? I live in a sheltered area on a mountain, miles from anything, so if an EMP event happened 20 miles away, would it affect me?

Herbalpagen : Kind of think of EMP like lightning, but the energy isn't concentrated into a single bolt.
The higher the altitude of a nuke explosion the more wide the effect of the EMP.In theory 3 large high altitude explosions over North America could fry most or all electronic devices in the lower 48 states and parts of Canada and Mexico.
Having mountains around you won't block the energy .
All solid state circuitry is at risk and once it's fried it's history.
This includes everything from your ipod to the control panels on the national power grid..
Faraday cages or boxes may protect circuitry ,has proven effective in simulated tests. Haven't had a real event ( thank God) to prove or disprove
the theory.
Hopes this helps......
