I'm starting to build a dual 55gal drum smoker, is anyone interested/capable of building one? If there's interest I'll take pics and do a write up as I build it. It will be a "T" shape with a single 55 vertical as the burner and another 55 horizontal as the smoke chamber.

OK. I'll get some pics of where I am now and post in a bit along with a PDF of the intersecting curve my wife worked up on AutoCAD for me.

Never thought of doing one that way. I would definitely be interested in both construction and a write up on how well it works.

Here goes.
You want 2 drums, the intersecting curve PDF will only work on a 55 gal drum but if you can create the curve for a 30 gal drum I don't see why it wouldn't work also.
Make sure whatever drum you get didn't hold something caustic or hazardous. Both of mine held water based "CoolTool" cutting lubricant from a buddy's machine shop so it won't be anything nasty for the burnout. You can see the tan/orange coating in the second pic.
The first thing I did was use my 4.5" angle grinder with a wire wheel to remove the paint from the outside. Wear old clothes, eye protection and the ears or ear plugs. It's like a combination Jamaican Kettle Drum band and Motley Crue concert turned up to 20. You WILL be deaf if you don't wear ears.
I chose to strip the paint first because I laid the drum on it's side and sat on it like a horse while I worked, it also slightly dampened the harmonics and once you cut off the top it weakens it too much.
If your drum lid is crimped on you will need to cut it off, I used my 4.5" angle grinder with a cut-off wheel and cut right along the bottom of the crimp then switched over to a 120 grit flap wheel to remove the burrs.

My wife just emailed me the intersecting curve so I'll start cutting that out tomorrow. She set it up in PDF to print out on 9 pages. You will need to cut off approx 3/4" from the edge when taping it together. Then cut out the curve and tape it to the top of your drum, trace it out with a Sharpie and using either a scroll saw or Sawzall with a fine tooth metal blade cut out the curve. This will give you the contour to mate the upper horizontal smoke chamber with minimal welding. I will update tomorrow with my progress and more pics.

There won't be any updates until the weekend. I spent today removing the front axle from my truck, tomorrow I have to go with a buddy to the airport and bring his truck up here so he doesn't have to pay for parking and Friday I'm reinstalling the axle into my truck so I'm planning on laying out the intersecting curve, cutting it out and fitting the cooking chamber on Saturday. Sunday I'll be hopefully working on cutting, reinforcing and installing the burn chamber door.

Thanks. I'm gonna need it. Ever lugged around a Dana 60? I used the winch on my ATV to slide it out from under the truck and I had to put a 700lb Arctic Cat 650 in reverse with both brakes on to keep from dragging it instead of the axle.
