I don't know much about this show, after all how real SHTF can it be for people who know they are on a reality show? But I caught the tail end of this show the other night. The group had just been attacked by raiders and several people had been pepper sprayed. One person in the group made a comment that had an impact for me. They said "Whats the point of raising food (as in the garden they had) when scavengers/raiders will be constantly attacking you to get it. It only attracks more notice".

This is something I've been thinking about when it comes to how much food to store. Raiding and violence will take up to three years before things settle down after a true economic collapse. Even in rural and wilderness areas of the USA you will have theft and violence from neighbors and wanderers who were less prepared. So my thought is to not even attempt gardening until most of the starvation dieoff has occured. That would take at least two years. Any other thoughts?

I have watched the first installment of that series and will watch this one too.
There are many mistakes they make like, first of all they should have set up security.

As far as gardening. If I do any gardening it will not be in neat little rows. I will have it integrated in with a co9nglomeration of other plants and weed looking plants so as to not make it obvious that I even have a garden.
Also i will only grow extremely low maintenance plants because water is not at an abundance for me at this time.

This is why, I can't stress enough, to get to know your naturally growing foods and plants for medicinal use in your area.

I have a good storage of food, but it would take a lot of time, money, and storage room to keep enough for several years, so I suggest a person supplement this supply with naturally occurring foods around you.
Also, I try to store foods that have the longest shelf life possible along with some that we rotate.

The Shows Name is "The Colony" on Discovery Channel on Tues at 9pm CST. I watched the first season, which was not bad, had some good ideas. This season started out with what I am thinking except for the old guy, some real whiney babies.

Simple security measures should have been put up "FIRST", then all stocks of food and gear broken into small groups and most hidden so raiders can't walk in and get everything easily; they may get some, but not all. They should have all been armed in some way, what they were trying to use as weapons were pathetic. I know, reality show, but come on.

Also after the initial tussle, I would have taken the 3 visitors out and they never would have reported back tot heir friends. That's what you do in real life. I understand helping, but when you get that kind of reaction and attitude, best to just take them out of the equation. I know sounds bad, but if your life or death, you don't play with safety of your loved ones.
Next, they should not have wasted food, they should have eaten the snake, and they should have kept the skin and tanned it for use later.
They picked a lousy spot for security for their HQ and never even secured it. Their cooking and water purification was in open where they could easily be attacked. Boards with nails should have been put over all the windows with the nails pointing out to harm anyone trying to enter the windows, same thing with door, boards with nails pointing up should have been placed inside the doorways to catch anyone coming in who should not be there.
As they said, what is the point of doing things if someone can just walk in and take it. Not much. Security is important, then do the rest of the stuff when you can defend it (if you have supplies for a few days and can do without having to immediately get food and water).

The flip side to this in seeing what not to do is for the bad guys to watch this show too. They will also get ideas on what to look for and how to attack.
This kind of show I don't think is a good thing for people to have right now. It is too close to the time and I don't want the thugs thinking ahead.
I know they probably already are, thinking all I need is a knife, gun, a bunch of ammo and I will take what ever I want.
The pressure cooker is slowly building up pressure.

Very good point Bill, though hopefully people who do learn anything from the show will also understand this and put countermeasures in place.
(Next there'll be a show on "Countermeasures") :D
When in doubt, apply rule ·223 or ·308 -- unless you have a more preferred calibre.

"The Colony" on Discovery Channel = Zzzzz..... Another NON-reality show for the sheeple. Rome had the Coliseum for the sheeples entertainment, we have the TV for the brain dead masses. The Roman gov handed out bread after the show, we have food stamps. 2000 years and what has changed?
