I drive about 680 miles a day going into either the Bronx or onto Long Island every day. I am trying to put together a bag that will get me home in case things fall apart while on the road. Getting out of the city could be a large problem. I know I can make it part of the way just with the brute force of my moose bumper! :D My biggest concern is having a firearm in a commercial vehicle that wont get me into trouble in the mean time. My company has no rules on weapons in vehicles. I keep my trusty knife with me all the time and I am going to be using a large ALICE. Any suggestions would be helpful.

My problem would be the laws that might apply in the area, which I don't happen to know.
So I suggest research the laws then go from there.

I would say that New york area has some tough gun laws. and I would say it is illegal to do what I say by Trying to keep a gun in your rig. best way I can think of with out alarm find a gun that is easy to break down and spread it across the whole cab and in your outside tool box. with min tools. ammo will be very limited because you dont want to raise a alarm for having a thousand rounds of ammo floating around. and Stay out of canada with any part of a gun. This is what comes to mine but maybe ILLEGAL!!! dont be dumb

The laws in NYC are pretty much no handguns. I was thinking about taking my short shotty, breaking it down to fit in my pack.

The NRA has a talk show on XM Radio called Cam&Company.According to the NRA there is no Federal prohibition on having a firearm in a commercial motor vehicle. They say the legality is dependant on the laws in the state you travel. At the Pilot truck stop they sell a sturdy little lock box that the outer housing can be bolted in a hidey spot. Then you can unlock it from the housing, and take the lock box with you when you leave the truck during off time.I keep my housing mounted under the bunk of my Freight shaker next to the air handler/rear A/C.It looks like a part of the truck. The lock box is the perfect size to hold my Steyr M9-A1,two 15rnd mags, scope rail, and my rail mounted LaserMax dismounted.Matt

As for the contents in the alice. Just make sure you always keep water in your truck so that you can take some with you when you have to go.

I would suggest some life boat rations also, they are not as tasty as mre's but they are high in calories and easy to store. Then you have to look at your surroundings and how long it would take you to get home from the farthest part. Map out the route but have 3 to 5 different ways to get home Just in case.

I would definitely suggest:
Water bottles and a canteen or camel pack
Life boat rations, some easy to carry foods like the tuna lunch packs spam etc. (they are not as bulky as canned food)
Maps of all Areas you travel with 3 to 5 ways home routed.
    Large tarp (for shelter etc.)
    550 cord
small machete or big knife to use as one (you get off main roads you may need it stomping thru bush)
Water TABS or some way to purify water.
3 to 5 different ways to make FIRE (matches, lighters , cotton balls covered in petroleum jelly, tinder, etc.)
Maybe a canned food or 2 to make a decent meal if you can carry it. (luxury item)
Extra socks and clothes if needed.
Depending on time of year gloves, snow shoes (or a way to make them) Winter gear etc.
Compass and know how to use it with your maps
coffee, sugar, hard candy. things that give you some go ahead.
    can openers (P38, P51)

Just keep in mind that if things go down and you get off the road the side of the road in many cases is the woods so you will have to pack accordingly.

Thanks for all the input guys. Will take it all into consideration. Also considering a move back out of NY state....that would solve a lot of problems!

Did a little research and this is what I found:

"A permit issued by the Firearms Control Section of the Police Department's License Division is required to possess a rifle or shotgun in New York City. The applicant must submit 4 photos taken within 30 days of application, be fingerprinted, and submit 2 affidavits from persons setting forth his good character. The fee for a rifle and shotgun permit and renewal is $55. The permit is valid for 3 years and is subject to automatic renewal, upon sworn application, and without investigation, unless the Police Commissioner has reason to believe that the status of the applicant has changed since the previous application.

It is unlawful for a person to possess a rifle or shotgun unless he is the holder of a permit as well as a certificate of registration, issued by the Firearms Control Section of the Police Department's License Division for each rifle or shotgun. There is no fee for the certificate of registration; the board keeps a file of all current and past holders of permits and certificates of registration."

Hope that helps you a bit.
