Ok, I thought I would give this fiction thing a try. Here is the beginning of what I have going so far
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Suddenly, Jonathan’s eyes jolted wide open as the realization that something was wrong struck him. What was that noise? No, it wasn’t the children. His wife, still asleep was laying quietly next to him in the comfort of their warm bed. He glanced at his nightstand to check the time when he heard it again - 3:11am. There was someone downstairs!
He slid out of bed trying to remain as quiet as possible and made his way to his closet. Sliding the door open he reached inside and fumbled around groping for his shotgun. He felt the cold barrel in his hands and started to feel a bit of security as he reached up on the shelf searching for the box. ‘They have to be here’ he thought as he continued to look for the box of shells he kept on the top shelf safely out of his children’s reach. After what seemed like an eternity, he found the box and removed a few shells.
Walking into the hallway above the stairs, he quickly scanned the floor below. He could see that nothing was out of the ordinary, but the hair on the back of his neck stood on end as his senses screamed at him. Gripping the shotgun tightly he inserted the shells as he shouted downstairs “I know you are down there! I want you out of my house NOW!” He chambered a shell with a loud CLACK-CLACK as he heard a shuffling from in his living room. A man’s voice broke the tense silence “Move man! Move!” A moment later the sound of a car starting and speeding away from his house gave him the courage to start his descent of the stairs.
At the bottom of the stairs, he looked over his shoulder into the den. The clock on his desk illuminated the time – 3:13am. Slowly he approached the darkened living room, his heart beating so hard he could feel his pulse like a bass drum through his entire body. Was someone still here waiting for him to come through the doorway?
Quickly, Jonathan snuck a peek around the corner. He did not take the time to register what was there but moved back to his place of cover. He stood quietly letting his brain process the picture of what he had just saw in his living room. Sweat was now covering his entire body and the shotgun felt like it could slip right out of his hands.
He thought hard. What was there? There was a small glow next to the couch. The window was wide open! Not sure if it was courage or fear that drove him, he burst into the living room with the shotgun at the ready for the first sign of a threat. There was nobody waiting to ambush him he realized and he fought to slow his breathing. He reached for the lights when a voice behind him almost caused him to drop the shotgun.
“What is going on?” his trembling wife asked as she stood at the bottom of the stairs. Her tired eyes clearly showing her fear as she looked for some reassuring, some security. “Jonathan?”
He turned around to see his wife, obviously awoken by the noise of the situation. “Don’t worry, Babe. Everything is ok.” Looking over her shoulder Jonathan spotted his desk clock loyally displaying the time – 3:15am. His thoughts began to race and he struggled to think clearly. What to do next? Could all of this really have happened in only a few minutes time?
Jonathan turned to his wife and lied. “Everything is fine honey, I thought I heard something. I must have been having a vivid dream. Go back to bed I’ll be up after I wind back down a bit.” Elizabeth still a bit groggy from sleep started her ascent back up the stairs and wearily answered, “don’t stay up long.”
Turning off the living room light, Jonathan saw the glow from behind the couch again. A bit of investigation found a flashlight with obviously weak batteries as the light only shined dimly. Holding the torch in his hands, his lie rung loudly in his mind as he thought ‘everything is not fine!’ Now suddenly unconcerned with the mid-summer heat, he closed and locked the window behind the couch as he scanned the area outside.

Weapons, like fire extinguishers, must be within reach and in full operating condition.
