People want to believe they are the most powerful things in the universe. I have had this argument many times. Certainly humans have a detrimental effect on the environment, but to think we are more in control of the global climate than a burning ball of gas 865,000 miles in diameter spitting flares of planetary sized radiation? Now that is arrogance.

Getting back to the original post :)

I've gotta go along with CFI's suggestion, mixed with grim's, and taking a line from one of your own posts.

Drop your liabilities and get new acquaintances that are going to be "on track." It can be difficult to do, especially if you've been knowing the people for a long time, but face it - if after two decades they haven't come around, they are going to be nothing more than leaches if/when the balloon goes up.

You may trust them with the lives of you and your children, but they will remember who has stuff that they will want to save theirs.

Sorry, but there isn't any way to sugar-coat it and still be honest.

...OK, that's my point of view... right wrong or indifferent :D Hopefully you can come to a decision that actually works for you.
Failing to prepare is preparing to fail - Franklin (paraphrased)
