Ok so we almost got the j-10 done but i need to know how to adjust the carb all i see is an idle screw not any mixture screws and it is burning a lot of fuel, (BLACK SMOKE) HELP !!

Find a CarbsUSA dealer nearby, and Trade for one that is already tuned up, Flow-Tested, and clean!

Doing it yourself can be a real PITA - just ask Race Team Managers! Lotsa sick engines and burned up motors!

MFGrs change Carbs and Gasket patterns Mid-year, and if you put a wrong gasket in a Carb, it will NOT work.

To do it yourself, you need to remove the carb, disassemble, Boil out, check, clean and lube every little spring and ballcheck, put it together Exactly right, with the right gasket set, using sealer enough to seal it up, but not run down into some teensy passage and plug it, and then be able to Tune it just right for your Engine. Most Mechs nowadays have lost (if they ever had it) the ability to tune a Carb.

Really, Johnny, I know your Money s tight, but You will save yourself a TON of headaches if you pay the $50-$100 it will take to have a known good carb on the engine - then you only have Timing, Spark, Ring and Valve sealing problems to begin with!

Question: Have you blocked off some Vacuum Fittings on the Carb? If you have, that might make it run rich at idle. If it is Black alla time, you have some passage not working. Have you put through some Seafoam? It works real good on cleaning out MINOR blockages.

Are you using NASTY gas? Get fresh! Any gas that is over Six Months without a heavy dose of Sta-Bil or Pri-G (Or Pri-D) will have degenerated. Use old gas to start your Burn Pile.

Has it been sitting with Carb open for a long time? Sometimes Insects get in there and block off something! Make sure there is no chance of fire, and then use air pressure nozzle to blast into the jets, venturis, and all around the base of the carb, and each of the Vacuum connections one at a time...sometimes that gets it clear and going.....

Is the "Automatic" Choke Stuck? Look inside the neck of the Carb - Is it blocked off by a big form-fitting Vane? Stick yer fanger down its gullet, and see if the vane can be moved. If it is stuck, loosen it up. Make sure you push on the right one - Before you go forcing anything, have Angel mash the throttle a coupla times - if the vane you see moves when she does so, then you are looking at the throttle butterfly, and you don't wanna go forcing it open or distorting it. If mashing on the throttle doesn't move the vane, than you are looking at the choke buttterfly, and you can GENTLY! Try to move it...

If you knew all this, Forgive me, I don't know how much you know about Carbs... You ARE young!

The '76 is already deep into the Air-Pump Smog SHIT isn't it? You have all of that still hooked up? If you have stripped all of that gingerbread off the engine, you will have a carb that is running WAY wrong.
