A lesson learned : I live on a dead end road a rual setting some houses mostly family living close by. About 2 yrs ago on a cold night after dark someone knocked on our door the wife said come in, thinking it was a good friend of ours. They knocked again she then got up and went to the door and looked out and seen a black man standing outside the door. She then screamed at me to come to the door. When I got there I said what's wrong she said it's a black man I then went to the bed room and grabed my .38 snubbie and went to the door gun cocked and behind my back foot aginst the door opened it about 1" and ask what he wanted he said he needed $2.00 for gas I told him he was at the wrong place at the wrong time and he should leave ASAP. The lesson here is I now lock the door at all times , have install a chain lock and I have moved a small hand gun & flahshlight near the door. We must be on guard at all times and harm can come when we least expect it. In these times of economical distress people are desprate. Crime will go up Don't be caught with your pants down!!! Since then I've had 2 more people come to my door at night wanting $$$.

dog hunter, you need to do several things ASAP before you become a victim.
1. Install motion activated lighting around your home. 2. Install several motion activated proximity sensors to an alarm system, switchable between lights and sound (to alert you not them). Place one or more on the road leading to your driveway, one at the entrance to your driveway and one at each side of your home or yard. 3. Place several weapons in strategic locations, you can purchase gun hides that look like picture frames and clocks. 4. Upgrade that .38 pea shooter to something with enough knockdown power to stop someone DEAD in their tacks and get some training on how to use it. 6. Readjust your attitude, EVERYONE is the enemy until proven otherwise. So far you have been lucky, I sure I speak for many around this forum, in that we would like to hear from you again not read about your obituary at the hands of some nut case. |

I adjusted And i have more than a 38 peashooter but 125gr +P JHP is alittle more than a peashooter IMHO I carry a naa 22mag 99% of the time and I don't feel underguned shot placement and haveing a gun is the two most important things and I do have motion lights. The main thing is to be alert at all times A gun in hand is worth ten in the safe.BURKE county is not a highcrime area yet but we all need to be alert.

dog hunter,
Please no disrespect intended but get yourself a REAL weapon, 10mm, 45acp and some expert close combat training. .22 Win Mag? Son you are deluding yourself. It is pretty obvious that you have a great deal to learn, in all honestly I hope you do before you get yourself or someone else killed. Good luck |

That's good advice about having a motion detector wired to an alarm inside, TigerPaws. I installed sensor lighting, but three months ago in the middle of the night intruders broke into both my wife's and my cars, parked at the far end of the house and away from the bedrooms. (I think they probably appreciated the light coming on so's they could easily see what they were taking - fortunately not too much.)
We now have sensor lighting/alarms sectored around the house. I was thinking that if alerted to an intruder approaching any entry of the house, while my wife made distracting sounds inside I should go out a door at the opposite side and approach them from a flank. However I'm not to sure if this is a good tactic. What would you suggest? When in doubt, apply rule ·223 or ·308 -- unless you have a more preferred calibre.

Bidadisndat,
My suggestion would be to have a secured location within your home with enough cover to protect you and your wife while giving you (the two of you) the best shot possible should the need arise. Example, if your kitchen faces the back door and you have a line of sight to the front door with the counter giving you some cover, then have you wife arm up and secure the last line of defense, say your bedroom. Look around the inside of your home the easiest access points and decide how to best provide cover for yourself and still give you the best position to shoot from. Make the bad guy(s) come to you and fight them on your terms not theirs. Most criminals are cowards and when the shooting starts they will flee. Going outside after him (them) is very dangerous unless you have very specific and current training in Close Armed Combat. Whatever you do, never and I mean never attempt to warn or capture someone, if you have a gun then be ready to use it, if you shoot shoot to kill. This crap about "Stop or I will Shoot" is nothing but TV bullshit, if you have a weapon in hand then you are ready to kill. NEVER threaten someone, if you or you family is being threatened enough for you to draw a weapon then shoot and do not stop shooting until they are dead or gone (in the case they get away then you know you need more target practice). Be careful when you divide your forces (your wife/son/family member) that you have practiced what to do and say otherwise you could end up in a friendly fire situation. We practice with Air Soft guns, believe me they are a great training tool. |

So you guys are saying a 22mag is not a real gun?? at close combat ranges of 15ft or closer a 22 mag would not stop an attacker? I have perconally killed both hogs and beef with a 22lr now I don't wont to argue with an expert ,but a 22 lr or a 22 mag will make you just as dead as 458 win mag David killed a gaint with a rock but he did have a little help and as for moving been here almost 45 yrs family all around aging parents 100yrds away can't leave . Just have to do the best I canBut I'll be sure to keep my thoughts to my self and leave this fourm open for the experts and for combat training Uncle Sam took care of that.

dog hunter you do what you want and believe what you want, but 32+ years of combat experience says differently. As I said you do what you want, all anyone can say is good luck because you will need it. Damn some people are simply too ignorant, self righteous and stupid to learn. |
