Camping Survival Tip

I have been reading through the forum and I have not seen this topic covered. While I was out camping and trying to set up a tent and the plastic tent spikes could not be hammered into the ground. The soil was filled with tree roots and rock. Two of the tent stakes broke. So I guess my tip would be to use 3/8" by 10" steel spikes instead. I just happened to have some in the truck and they worked great. You can hammer them right into the base of a tree if needed and tie your tent off. To can also use them to tie tarps off to trees and set up trip wires. I am sure there are a million other uses, and the good news is that they are fairly cheap and you can pick them up at Home Depot. So I now have about a dozen I keep with my gear.

Not being facetious, but I'm not setting up a camp where there are a bunch of tree roots and rock. -GrimOne-future -Fan Replacer post SHTF.

On the other hand, Grim, you may not always have the choice of an ideal spot.
(Grim will now deliver a lecture on "Carefully Choosing the Ideal Position for your Camping Site.)
When in doubt, apply rule ·223 or ·308 -- unless you have a more preferred calibre.

Bid, I know from watching a movie it's a bad, bad idea to camp in Australia! The dingos!
But I can't imagine any situation where you'd be camping in a site that's less than what one wants. -GrimOne-future -Fan Replacer post SHTF.

Babies in prams: What the dingoes call "Meals on wheels".
The trick is, Grim, to choose a site midway between the dingoes and the koalas, somewhere to the left of the kangaroos, the right of the emus, and well away from the goannas. Don't ask the local aborigines for assistance: Once the local tribe knows where you're at, you'll likely be having to feed them, or be forced to buy lots of souvenir "genuine" boomerangs, didgeredoos or artwork. I forgot to mention the trapdoor, funnel-web, wolf and red-backed spiders. Oh, and the eastern brown, black, red-bellied black, tiger, and green tree snakes. As the L.J. Hooker real estate ads say: Location, Location, Location! When in doubt, apply rule ·223 or ·308 -- unless you have a more preferred calibre.

I realized, upon looking for a link on that clip, that many people don't even know what the heck we're talking about.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azaria_Cha ... appearance ![]() ![]() There's been a thread hijack and I'm part of it. OK, let's go back to discussion regarding tent stakes. I like mine medium rare. -GrimOne-future -Fan Replacer post SHTF.

Actually I solve the problem of the tent stakes, by having purchased titanium stakes about 5 years ago, expensive, but were worth it. :)
