Sticker tags "doing fine" says biggest
user - Houston
Various places we have been hearing negative
murmurs about performance of sticker tags, but so far anyway we can't
nail down anything solid. The Harris County Toll Road Authority (HCTRA)
probably has more sticker tags in use than anyone else in the world.
330k or a third of their approximately one million transponders are now
sticker tags and they are doing over 200k transactions/day with them.
Fred Philipson, Services
Director, at Harris County Toll Road Authority told us the Houston TX
system's eGo+ sticker tags "are working fine." He said: "They aren't
causing us any trouble."
He says
they average 15 or 16 'handshakes' or read or write opportunities per
pass at 60mph (100km/hr). That's quite enough, says Philpson, though it
is five or six fewer than the battery-powered box tags they use and
five or six more than the unpowered box transponders NTTA uses.
No
surprises
"We haven't had any surprises. They
work the way we saw in the tests." Philipson said..
"We've set up the readers so we have two different
read zones, one for the sticker tags, the other for the battery powered
box transponders. We're actually doing better with the sticker tags
than with the (box) transponders," Philipson said.
Major reason for the better result, Philipson
said, is that with sticker tags they get stuck on the windshield
permanently: "Customers can't take them off and move them around. Once
they are on the windshield they are really stuck there."
Quite a lot of read failures with box
transponders attached by velcro are due to motorists not mounting the
transponder - then waving it at the reader held in one hand, or even
forgetting about it and having it in the glovebox where it usually
won't read.
Phasing
out all box transponders in favor of stickers
All new transponders being issued since April this year by HCTRA have
been sticker tags. The toll agency also has a program to phase out the
remaining inventory of box transponders and to replace them with
sticker tags. They are emailing customers with an offer of a sticker
tag if they will return the box transponder. HCTRA is initially
targeting motorists with older box transponders and hence likely a
short battery life, or ones that have a poor read record. They will
subsequently move to replace progressively newer.
Others
Toll agencies in Puerto Rico Highway Authority, Georgia Tolls, Texas
DOT, Central Texas RMA, and Washington State DOT have bought TransCore
eGo and eGo+ sticker tags. Florida is the next closest market to make a
decision on it.
So far only
TransCore has formally announced and is selling sticker tags, but Sirit
also has one ready. Their major sales of transponders have been in
California to that state's now ancient Title 21 standard. The toll
agencies want the standard modernized but until its future is clear it
won't pay a manufacturer to engineer a new transponder.
