Mrs Trash trucker, if you are done canning if you will only be canning what can fit in the canner, You can leave the jars in there. If not, get a jar lifter, and a towel so that you can move the jars if you need to make room for others that you will be putting on the surface to sit overnight. Then you can examine the jars and lids with bands within 24 hours. Im sorry you had to go thru this. Next time It will be better as you will be aware of the situation before hand. Hope you are doing much better, and hope it doesnt scare you as to not can anymore. Back in the days they would turn their canning jars upside down with lids and bands, to make sure they sealed and if they didnt they would repeat the process again and again of course within 24 hours. Thats how they did it back then, and usually they sealed, or they would use candle wax so no air would get into the jars and preserve the food. Keep us updated on situation. If you need help ask, always listening. LOL

Mrs Trashtrucker,
So glad to see you are doing better. Thank you for sharing. I just canned up some asparagus yesterday & today and was very very careful getting them out, even with the jar lifter. |

Thanks, Angel and all, for your well wishes. And... nope, not skeered! In fact, I have some dilly carrots cooling right now. :) I no longer touch my bands to tighten them...even when using my tattler lids, despite what the tattler instructions say. They seal up just fine without touching them. Next on the canning agenda is rabbit. Our litter of 7 bunnies is nearing the end of their days. I'm glad you bought some Amish B&W Ointment, Doc. I have also heard testimonies from diabetics who use it on hard to heal wounds. It's great stuff! My wounds are healed up and time will tell if they stay noticeable. I do have some discoloration still on my neck and sometimes its noticeable on my face in certain spots. I've even been accused of having hickies on my neck. |

Are the tattler lids the re-usable ones? Have heard of a brand on GB, is that the one?

I've heard that wal-mart canning jars are inferior, and to not use old jars that have any deformity or chip on the lip.

Yes, Tattler lids are the reusable. I LOVE them. Yes, Glenn has advertised them. I highly recommend them. I've used them in water bath and also pressure canners and have had excellent results with them. They are wonderful. I stocked up on them. http://www.reusablecanninglids.com/
I've used many different types of jars...definitely check your edges for chips/cracks and avoid using them. I got some used jars from craigs list and didn't inspect them very carefully. A few broke in my water bath canner. That's a bummer since you lose everything inside that jar plus the rest of the good jars in the canner come out sticky with what spilled out of that broken jar. I have used mayo jars in my water bath canner with good results. I wouldn't use them in my pressure canner though. You want good quality jars when putting them under pressure. |

I too would not use chipped or cracked jars, and i dont tighten the lids, only finger tight and if you must use a pot holder or something of that nature to tighten if you must. Though its best to wait till its cooled and leave overnight then you can tighten after that time.
