One of the things I like about this site is there's a view toward realistic scenarios matched with seeking solid solutions.

There are many sudden survivalists and narrow preppers who imagine TEOTWAWKI as Little House on the Prairie level of conflict and darkness and they become upset if someone mentions that there will be problems with other people and conversations can't take place that are of value. I also like the fact that most folks here know the important difference between survivalism and survival training.

I want to prepare for the hard stuff,not for a version of survivalism that's a silly version of a camping trip!

I can imagine a wide range of scenarios from what I've experienced, when stationed in Upstate New York and a crippling ice storm hit and I joined several locals along with another Army Officer and we set about setting things right, helping neighbors who were strangers to us, with others bringing us sandwiches, soup and coffee while we chipped ice, moved limbs and spread salt and ash. To racing through the woods during a Northern European storm while trees fell and being buffeted by high winds throughout the night as 90 people died in Germany and Denmark, trying to stay dry, to situations I've not seen, but others have, with the dead untended, laying in the streets, where stranger equals potential or realized threat and where there's an acceptance that use of force may be necessary.

most realize the possibility, likelihood even, that things aren't going to come out all peaches and cream...some just don't like to think it can..and you are right this board is indeed full of realists.

Well, I like to think it's full of common sense folks. I like that we can discuss actions we might take in a realistic way too...although the Little House idea does sound pretty good. lol :gs:

grimOne, I agree. The folks here are all about 'keeping it real'. It's only after you look at a problem realistically that you can make a plan and prep.
Sadly, the Sheeple are mostly in a self-delusional dream world that will shatter at the slightest unexpected problem.

A simple thing like that is great here. I've seen it where simply using the term 'sheeple' is traumatic and earth shattering to some and they can't handle it and they start announcing (dramatically) then they're leaving if anyone uses the term. My gosh, how do they make it in the real world now.

I keep finding not only good information, but the right mindset. This is the sort of site that is going to help folks.

I like the fact that several of us here have BEEN places where we could SEE first hand how human beings can be toward other human beings. We've seen how cruel and terrible they can be, and know that if things were to get bad here (wherever we may live), then it will be the same here. We know that one person can kill another over milk, without batting an eye. That very fact alone, I think, contributes alot to the realistic tone of this website. Sure, comb through and you'll find some odd ball things around, not that those are wrong, but, depending on your own experiance and views, you might find some things a little off. But, then, why NOT cover it? It's always great to have new people come in and participate, and start, discussions, and share knowledge, because it keeps the questions and perspectives fresh. And in my opionion, if you aren't prepping for what's real, then there is no point.

most folks here know the important difference between survivalism and survival training.

here's how I see it;
Prepping/ prepper: they are more into self reliance, prepare for small, medium and large emergencies. Gradually get into long term. focus on skills and well as stocking up.
Survivalist; a bit more militant, a bit more into long term survival situations, enjoy the guns and ammo a bit more than your average "prepper', more likely to prepare for attack from gangs or government
Survivalist training; more militant, more wilderness skill focus, train for events where they will need to use avoidance and attack. More focused on defending and hardship living.

I think that most preppers are aware of the survivalist training, but they prepare for a wider variety of softer emergencies and to remain living in a less militant environment. This in not to say that a prepper is not a survivalist or that a survivalist is not a prepper. Survivalist training included many prep related issues. :D
