I agree,I know this isn't a new post but I've been giving this subject a bit of thought lately. I watched a bunch of videos on youtube and thought cool, knife tests. Then I bought a cpl knives highly recomended on the net, went out and used them and thought..."yup,junk" to me. and another one that everybody thought was overpriced junk is actually a great knife with alot of uses...to me, its more of a tool than a knife and you have to treat it as such, you wouldnt try and gut a fish with a camp axe,you could but itd be a pain. Then I thought about the 18yrs I was a commercial fisherman out of kodiak ,dutch harbor, sand point, false pass, chignik, homer, cold bay, prince william sound,Alaska(theres more),and throughout all of that halibut, tanner crab, dungeness crab, grey cod, black cod,and a ridiculous amount of deer hunting(in kodiak I used to fill my tags (6) and then fill my grandparents proxy tags (12more)) I pretty much used the same knives and not one of them except the knife used for cleaning halibut had more than a 3-4 in blade and they were either made by victoriaknox we just called them vickies little red plastic handle knife with a full serration, carefull they are stupid sharp and takes 5sec to touch the blade up,I'd wear two of these on my belt horizontally so I could grab on with either hand. then on my suspenders on my rain pants (I refused to wear a raincoat unless they were coming over the wheelhouse, too constrictive for me, you have to be able to move on deck) upside down I had a white handled dexter russel knife with an aggressive looking serration(kinda reminded me of a mora with a full serrated blade) taped to each suspender the sheath kept the blade really secure as I never had one fail, the reason I had two of each is on the water if the worse happened and you got drug over by your strong arm and your knives were rigged to use with that arm, you'd drown with the 4 at least I had options, because sometimes you need it right now and it has to be there,I've had another crewmember grab a knife out of my belt to cut the line that was about to ruin the day of a 3rd crewmember because it was closer to him than the 1 knife he was wearing working the way we were at the time. I used a 6in blade dexter russel to clean halibut when we were doing that. Other than a machete I've never had a use for bigger knives. Then I got into driving log trucks after I got out of fishing and learned the value of a good sharp axe(the cpl I have are shaving sharp) You can cut cable with an axe lol (done it, no choice) and the camp axe I have and am very comfortable using is kind of my replacement for a bigger knife. I have a k-bar,bought it for it's history with the military and have taken with me camping and never used it always used smaller blades (5in or less most of the time I just naturally reached for the folder that's always with me)for stuff I needed a knife for and any kind of woodwork I used the camp axe(just had to replace my gerber camp axe that thing was pretty cool) This is just my opinion. Moral of the story like was allready said is individuality, everybody has a diff style in what they are confortable with in a knife.Me, for a fixxed blade I like a shorter moderately thick blade for a fixxed blade(under 6in),for a folder...I've been carrying the same benchmade folder for like 12yrs and I'm getting ready to send it to benchmade for a tuneup(cpl screws are gone and it just needs a tuneup and I want some spare screws,still,12yrs.......) in the meantime I'll pickup some kind of two bladed old timer(like to find an old one) and I'll be happy with that too,I've had them before. Anyways, long enough book. Later, Lost
