wulfin wrote:"American Apocalypse: The Collapse Begins ["Paperback] by Nova

This is a fast-paced, action-packed thriller set in America at the beginning of a socioeconomic collapse. Although an innocent casualty of the chaos, one young man must discover his inner strength and defiant courage as he comes of age learning how to survive in the wasteland of failing services, unemployment, and violence. With the economy in free fall, the government crippled by indecision, the streets taken over by new political party's, and the fragile institutions of civilization crumbling, a young man finds himself homeless and alone on the outskirts of Washington, D.C., facing certain death unless he can master survival skills he never imagined needing. Fending off violent citizens in an urban landscape that is gradually sliding into looting and mayhem, the protagonist emerges as an ultimate force of justice in a lawless land. This compelling, fast-paced novel pulls readers in and lets them experience firsthand what life in the United States will be like as its teetering society begins to fall.

their are also a couple more books in the AA series by nova that are great books as well. Thanks for the other recommendations as well wulfin. Hadn't heard of most of them. shrug Guess I'll have to tell the wife it's wulfins fault he made me buy more books.
If by my experiences, mistakes, and training. I can help one person to gain the wisdom that will allow them to survive or to save the life of someone they love then I can truly say, that all of the things I have done have been worth every second spent.

Whenever any government becomes oppressive it is not only the right but the duty of the citizenry to revolt. Thomas Jefferson

I can understand how a person can look at mankinds inhumanity to man and say there is no God; but I can not understand how a person can look at the mountains and the stars and say there is no God. Abraham Lincoln

No state has the inherrant right to survive through conscript troops. Roman matrons used to say to their sons "Come back with your shield or on it.". Later this tradition declined, so did Rome. excerpt from Time Enough For Love by Robert Heinlien

Book Review “SHUT DOWN” by W. R. Flynn
Wulfin Dec 30, 2011

I just finished this book and it is a fast read. Over all the book is decent read and story, has a good premise on how fast a economic collapse could cascade, but some things I don’t see as being real world or practical. A bit part of the book talks about peak oil, which I don’t believe we have actually hit. If we drilled we would have plenty for quite some time.
A couple of things I did like are the characters are interesting and the way most people are not prepared for an interruption of the transportation system or a collapse of the banking system. One of the things I did not like was the way the author took for granted once things go bad, that it would stay that way for the rest of their lives. Technology just does not go away. What is abandoned can be reclaimed in time or other technologies can be discovered that will do the same thing. Mechanics don’t stop being mechanics, electricians don’t stop being electricians and inventive and thoughtful people will adapt either current technologies to their needs or make new ones.
The battle scenes while exciting are not very realistic. Looks good on written page, but not how things would probably work out in the real world. Also the lack of communications via hand held radios or the use of land line type devices was non existent. I am pretty sure baring a major EMP pulse of some type, communications would be more advanced then they showed especially early on.
The military was never actually seen post SHTF, which I do not think is a valid possibility, they will be somewhere doing something especially early on.
Also the book ah no real preppers, besides some who had weapons and some “other items”.

Over all I would give the book a 7 out of 10 for a decent read, but don’t expect to find any good prepper info in it. It’s just a good story.
