Ingredients for making Laundry soap
-5gal bucket for putting your finished product in
-wooden spoon to stir the mixture
-ivory bar soap, or any soap you would like to use
-grater that you will not use but for soap
-medium pot that you will only use for making soap
-3/4 cup borox laundry booster
-3/4 cup arm & hammer super washing soda
-6 cups of water in pot
-1gal jug of cold water
-1/2 gal jug of cold water

Recipe:

First you will want to get your pot out and set it on the stove.
Next you will take your grater, and grate your bar of soap into the pot
After that you will put the temperature on med-lo heat
and add your 6 cups of water, but only one cup at a time
because the soap will need to melt.
get a bowl that you wont use again and put your powders of borox and arm and hammer super washing soap into it.
After the soap is done melting fully you will want to get the bowl of soap and add it to the water that you are done melting the soap and turn the temp to med-hi heat, and stir until you dont feel anymore grindness on the bottom of the pot, after it is done and you dont feel anymore grind, you will take the pot off the stove, and put it into the 5 gal bucket, then you will add your 1gal cold water and stir while you are pouring the water in, then add your 1/2 gal jug of cold water, after you stir for the last time on the 1/2 gal jug, then you will close the lid but not too tight, save space for a little air. After about a few hours, your soap in the bucket should look like jelly, and you will want to use about 1/2 a cup of soap to your laundry. Before you let the jelly sit, you can also add scented oils to the soap to add scent. To make this recipe it takes about 30-45 mins, and you dont spend a whole lot to make it or to buy it. It will be about $8-$10 to make this from the items you have to buy from the store.

I'm just curious how it is you're making soap by adding....soap.

Don't get me wrong, it does look like fun, and in fact I've bookmarked it as a project to do with my daughter when she gets a little older.

But...this site being SHTF oriented, this is (IMHO) not going to help us much in making soap, if it requires soap as input.

I think mainly she is showing HOW CHEAP you can make laundry soap borax, superwash and ivory bar of soap making 3 gallons of laundry detergent for under 3$ cause LOL she is my GF and we just did this last week and it is pretty neat.

The box of borax and box of super wash last a couple times of making this since you only use 3/4 cup or something for the mix.

I can see how that would be useful.

I've always concentrated on
A) Trying to make sure I have what I need
B) Planning on how to get/make what I might need.

But, I think I have to start thinking more in category
C) How to make the most of what I already have.

well by simplly buying all the items on the ingredients you will be saving your self time and money instead of every time you need detergent going to the store. Right now gas is almost 3 bucks a gallon, and its a waste to drive to the store just to get something to wash your clothes. and you will keep it stored and when shtf you will need this to wash your clothes. What if you can not get laundry soap from the store, then what. This eliminates the theory of what if.

You can also us Fels Naptha bar soap, which is a laundry bar soap, instead of Ivory. Make this concoction and save money on retail laundry soap and use it for other preps.

hi,railroad here.question:has anyone done a test to see which laundry detergent would be the best to use in a "shtf" situation.cold water vs hot water,etc.how would liquid vs powder perform?just thinking-god bless

I wanted to thank you for posting this, I use it all the time and it gets my clothes cleaner than store bought laundry soap (hubby is a coal miner it removes grease and coal dust)!. I use fels-naptha to make mine though but everything else is the same. Now as far as when SHTF I haven't made lye soap for years but have it in my recipe box. I will be teaching the younguns how to do this soon so when I do I will video it and put it on here for everyone to see. I will tell you I am stockpiling borax and washing soda though because it has so many uses. For those of you wanting to make lye soap start now in finding dry lye, you may have to order it online as it is getting harder to find or if you really want to do it all make your own out of hard wood ash.I will also post how to do this with a video but it will be after it warms up a bit.

We use home made liquid and wash in cold water. Most of the time, any fabric softener is vinegar.
Borax, washing soda and vinegar will pretty much last forever and are VERY cheap and versatile.
