" The Well Fed Backpacker"
by June Feming, copyright 1976
1 12 oz package chocolate chips
1 6 oz package butterscotch bits
1/2 cup honey
1/2 cup chopped dates or prunes
1/2 cup yellow raisins or currants
1/2 cup shredded coconuts
1/2 cup cashews
1/2 cup walnuts, or almonds, or peanuts
1/2 cup wheat germ
1 cup uncooked oatmeal
Melt chips in top of double boiler; add honey; pour over remaining ingredients in a large bowl. Mix well; pour into greased pans and cool. Cut or break into bite sized chunks.
Note:Cut into 2 inch squares and wrap with saran wrap. They tend to want to melt some in hot weather so they are put on the top inside of the hanging food bag at night to firm up, and packed inside the pack with cloths to insulate from the heat during the day. They will last well over a week this way if cooled enough at night. Try them and I think you will like them.
