HARD TACK

( * Note. This recipe has been updated for modern OVEN -- otherwise, ingredients remain the same. )

Ingredients:
5 Cups unbleached, all purpose flour
1 tbsp salt
1 to 1 2/3 Cups water

Directions:
Preheat oven to 450*F.
Combine ingredients.
Add water until you can form a firm ball.
Keep dough from sticking to your hands by adding more flour.
If it gets too dry, add more water.
Roll out on a well-floured surface.
If dough sticks to rolling pin, sprinkle with more flour.
Roll dough to approx. half-inch thickness.
Cut dough into bite size squares and poke with holes.
Place on baking sheet or tin and place in oven.
Bake until lightly browned, which should be roughly 20 minutes.
Remove. Let cool before eating.

I know this stuff last forever and was used back in the war and very simple to make and light weight to carry. But it has no taste and just nasty to eat. If it's the last thing u have I could see doing but not for me.

Actually the batches I have made with wheat flour tasted pretty good if you broke it up and fried it in grease or put it in a stew or soup. By itself it was edible, but not a thrill, but did not have to soak it to eat it until about 6 months old, then it would not soften in the mouth enough for my old teeth to rbeak it apart.

Double bake it. One time through won't remove enough moisture for looong term storage.

Soak in your coffee to soften it.
