For those of you who rather the look of a EBR, what has become popular as of late is a AR platform in 22lr. Mostly under 500 bucks and have from several manufacturers to chose from.

Love the 22 which is my basic survival gun. Eskimos use to kill polar bears with a single shot 22. They would dig a hole big enough for the man to enter with a baloon cavity at the bottom then go out to round up the bear. Bear chases man back to hole. Man jumps in hole with 22 rifle waiting and as bear reaches for man the eskimo shoots the bear in the eye killing him.
If any have lead, vice the copper clad, it would be advisable to check for corrosion and detoration of the lead. I have had a few rounds, 10-15 yrs old begin building up white lead deposit which stops them from going in the chamber. All lead 22's are now in sealed ammo boxes and checked every year. No use in when the time comes to use them.

A RUGER 10-22 would be all one would possibly require in a sure survival mode operation.
But then again, a good Marlin bolt action .22CAL LR unit is of most use in everyday survival mode duty. CHEERS!! I quite agree with this thread!

I have one of the original AR7s and it is OK for what it is, but I wouldn't run out and buy a new one.
I have several other .22's. A couple of single shots including the Marlin 100 my grandfather owned, several bolt actions including an ultra accurate Anschutz. Man that thing has brought home more meat prizes from shooting matches than I could haul in a 3/4 ton pickup. It definitely shoots much better than I can shoot it. Also have a Winchester model 290 that my father gave me as my first gun about 50 years ago. Also have a Taurus PT22 that is excellent for the pocket. Something that I noticed is not much comment on the .22 magnum. This is an excellent caliber for small game and I am sure there are those who have harvested whitetails with them. Anyhoo, if I was restricted to just one caliber, it would have to be the versatile .22.

I gotta say, this posting brings me back to my lusting after a Rossi Trifecta.
The 22LR appeals to me for all the reasons above. But this Rossi also gives me the .243 Winchester, for deer hunting? Wild boar hunting? Raccoon? Bigger 'possum. And killing coyotes for hides / fur is not something that's unheard of here (central NC) anymore either. AND, if I'm not home as happens some nights, it gives mama that 20 guage to 'paint' the walls with if she needs it. (God forbid, please don't ever let it happen) I think she'd have a better chance with that than the SKS that she's relied on for 20 odd years. I've been considering a 22 pistol too. And again, because ammo is cheap. I actually used a rented 22 for my CCH. And after having not shot a pistol in more years than I'll admit to now, I hit a lot of centers and was just off center with the others. I've got a buddy who will let me shoot on his place (no fees, no one watching me to see WHO I am or WHY I started coming around) (I didn't 'join' my nearest firing range as they had more questions about me, than I was asked when I got a "Secret' clearance in the Navy) But those guys use 22LR rifles and pistols or .50 cal, muzzle loaders down there. They shoot most Thursday mornings for practice. I'm just not into the black powder thing though. Anyway, good posting FF.
To Paraphrase Dr. King:

The best part about the .22 is it is cheap all the way around. Even a brand new 10/22 is only $200! No reason not to own one.

If ya had the opportunity for two weapons for protection or to provide food....
I've found the Ruger 10/22 and the Mossberg 500 in 12 gauge enough to cover near any type situation that could come up...... But recently I've become interested in the Rossi Circuit Judge in a combo of 45LC and .410 shot gun loads.....but maybe that's just a third gun ?? JC |

Make sure you check into extra rifled barrel inserts on the Rossi Circuit Judge, I heard some rumors of them wearing out and causing major accuracy issues. Check extensively on the net on all spec & reviews. I'd rather spend the money on a civilian AK & am actually planning on it. Can't beat 30 rounds of 7.62 going down range out to about 250-300 meters.

Hey "Judge X",
Let us know if you find some deals on that AK.........I'm liking it as one or two don't cure my collective itch..... I'm confused as to what models are good ones and which ones aren't... THANX, JC |
