This worries me that something that would normally spoil, you now have a shelf life of 9 months. Does anyone know how they process it for this shelf life? Are there any chemicals or additives included that they'll later claim causes cancer? If you're planning to use it for cooking, why this instead of powdered?

http://www.gossner.com/home/gossner/adm ... id=3&mid=2 Gossner U.H.T. (Ultra High Temperature) Milk is real Grade A milk that has all the vitamins and nutrition of conventional pasteurized milk and is ready to use. No preservatives are added. Gossner Milk is Ultra High Temperature processed (over 280 degrees for several seconds) and packaged so that it is shelf stable and stays fresh without refrigeration until the sealed package is opened. WHY DOESN'T U.H.T. SHELF STABLE MILK NEED REFRIGERATION? Gossner's U.H.T. Shelf Stable Milk is heated to 282 degrees and held for several seconds, then cooled to 70 degrees in a continuous pressurized system. The milk is then packaged aseptically in a special Tetra Pak container. The elevated temperatures are sufficient to destroy all pathogenic and spoilage bacteria, hermetically sealed to retain freshness. WHAT IS ASEPTIC PACKAGING? A process by which a product is packaged free from bacteria. Our Tetra Pak package is free from bacteria and hermetically sealed to keep out air and light. Bacteria, air and light are the basic ingredients that cause milk to sour, lose food value, and take on undesirable oxidized flavors. IS IT REAL MILK? Yes, each package of Gossner Foods U.H.T. Shelf Stable Milk carries the "Real" seal label, this guarantees that the milk is an authentic dairy product. Gossner Milk is Grade A liquid milk ready to use, just open the package and use, cool for best results and refrigerate after opening. IS IT JUST AS NUTRITIOUS AS CONVENTIONAL PASTEURIZED MILK? Yes, U.H.T. processing and foil lined aseptic packaging of Gossner's Shelf Stable Dairy Products ensures safety and long shelf life without significantly altering the product's nutritive value over the recommended use by date printed on the top of each hermetically sealed carton. ARE PRESERVATIVES USED OR ADDED TO THE MILK? No, preservatives are not added to Gossner Milk. HOW LONG DOES GOSSNER MILK LAST? Gossner Milk can be stored on the shelf at room temperature for months before being opened. It is recommended that it is used by the date stamped on the top of the carton. Once the package is opened it must be refrigerated. IS AN ASEPTIC TETRA PAK PACKAGE SIMILAR TO A CAN? Yes, the package is a flexible can and should be treated like a can. If it is damaged, punctured or bloated it should be discarded and never used. It should not cause any issues at all, now or down the road. Hope this helps! We drink it instead of regular milk. I got sick of running out of milk or milk going bad in the fridge (there are only three of us in the house and we don't drink a lot of milk) On a mountain top in western Mass.

Thanks folks, I appreciate the answer. We're going to have to give it a try. There's just the two of us and the wife drinks more milk than I do. We also have plenty of spoilage, but there's still something about milk setting on the shelf for 9 months.

For those of you using powdered milk and think it tastes nasty - YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG....
... While stationed in Turkey I found out that all the milk sold on the two main Air Bases was reconstituted Powdered Milk. The Air Force had a milk plant on both Air Bases where the powdered milk was reconstituted with coconut oil (at about 40% cocoanut oil with 60% water). The cocoanut oil/water mixture was used for the water portion of the powdered milk formula. .. I found this out when we went up to Karamaursel AB in Northern Turkey to close the Base down. After we removed the Nuclear Munitions Site (oops, I meant Munitions Site) we started on the rest of the Base, the Bowling Alley, the Exchange, the Hospital, etc. Eventually we got around to the milk plant. I was simply amazed -" we have a milk plant?" "Where are all the cows???" .. The powdered milk was in 55-lb bags and was labeled "A product of Borden Dairy,,,, blah blah bla...". It was then that I learned that we had been drinking reconstituted powdered milk all along. They had the packaging down to a science, there were half gallons, quarts, pints, half pints and Gallon Jugs. There were even 3-gallon and 5-gallon bladders that they used in the dinning halls.... AMAZING... .. You can learn a lot when you are involved in closing a US Military Installation - I was involved in Closing fourteen, and building five others in my career.... ... I have tried this and it really makes a difference. My better half (who absolutely hates powdered milk) will even drink it.... ... The trick is to mix the cocoanut oil and water, then bring the liquid up to a simmer before adding the powdered milk. Then you simply combine/mix and turn the heat off - let cool, and chill. Then all you have to do is put it into a carrafe and serve. ... One of my fellow retirees told me he uses all cocoanut milk (this is what he calls cocoanut oil) and only ads as little water as he can to get by. I haven't talked with his better half, but then she hasn't used the dreaded "I simply Hate that powdered crap that Steve calls milk" phrase either. So I am assuming (but cannot confirm) that his Powdered Milk Hating Spouse doesn't have any problems with it either... ... Dave Phoenix, AZ

For folks looking for UHT (Long Shelf Life) milk, try this = http://diversifiedfoods.com/osc/index.php?cPath=21, then post a review. I'd try it myself, but I don't drink milk.

That's great, but it's about 3x the price I was getting the same milk at dollar tree for. Unfortunately, they no longer carry it. you could buy it for $1 per quart...and then they up and quit selling. It's very good. My picky child can't tell a difference, and neither can I.
