I was thinking a simple solar oven around the area would work.
They can reach temps between 200, 300 in the winter.

Doc G wrote:I dug my outhouse hole, 18" of rocky dirt, 18" of tight sticky red clay with rocks, and another 2" of grey kalichi clay (next best thing to cement!). I quit after 2" of that shtuff! In all, 2.5' diameter, just over 3' deep in less than 2 hrs, solo. It's a diggin' machine.

Doc G, I like your tool suggestion!
I''m just wondering how well your outhouse will perk with all that clay. Seems to me it would be a foul, wet sewage pond that wont evaporate much because it has a small house built over it.
I helped build a few outhouses and cleaned the walls and insides of many while working for the Department of Natural Resources WildLife Division. Those are some deep holes! And they have honey wagons scheduled regularly to clean the waste.
I know you have to put that waste somewhere...how thick is that clay anyway? I know of some clay in the Mio, MI area that is 20 plus feet thick. I'd hate to dig by hand in any of that clay.
Anyway, I do appreciate tool suggestions and I like the one you mention with the 6" spade bit.

The spade bit on the 22lb hammer is awesome. I also do pool repair, and way too many times that bit and hammer has caused damage not intended. :hb:

As for the outhouse, we are only on property about every 4 weeks, and its just me and gf so it's not a high use scenario. I have only seen it hold water once right after a monsoon rain. I use a natural septic system granular to aid in breaking down the waste and paper. House was a year old this past September, I do keep a visual check on fullness, so far so good. Looks barely used, waste is breaking down pretty well. It ventilates fairly well along the sides at the base of it and believe it or not, not much "aroma" to it.

It is cleaned with either simple green or a bleach type cleaner every trip on arrival and prior to departure. It is actually one of the cleanest outhouses I've ever used. Ladies as guests are impressed with it. We have obviously paper, but we also keep moist wipes (not allowed in potty) and hand sanitizer, paper towels, it is lighted, we have a night light for the door at night for guidance through the dark woods, it's pretty decent.
