i agree with the .22 chatter i have only 2 but more will come sooner or later hopfully as bargains. ones a north american arms pocket gun its good for grabbing in a pinch shuven it in or pocket and having a back up. the other is a ruger mark 3. my perents and brother have em. after shooting theirs i was sold. its reliable accurate as f***. im not and expert buy no means but i can group 10 shots, a mag, in the size of a quarter at 25. and st 50 im in 6 inches. my wife loves it it her night stand gun now. but totaly agree this pistal would be one of the first things we grab. ans as far as it not being a good human gun more people have been killed by .22s then any other caliper. i carry a .45 1911 and love it but no matter the calliper you hit em in the head thier done no matter the caliper its all about the shooter and thier ability

Speaking of which I don't know about you all but I personally own a pheonix arms .22lr pistol. I have to say for a cheap pistol this little dude has not let me down and I have shot my god I don't know how many rounds through it. I have seen other reviews that are not so good but I guess I got lucky.

That's interesting. I've seen the Pheonix pistols but steered away from them from what I had heard. I'll take a second look.
I have a Heritage revolver with a 4" barrel. It's single action, but it was cheap and when it comes to accuracy, I'm the limitation not the revolver. I also have a magnum cylinder so I can shoot either type of ammo. The .22 mag rat shot does a decent job on snakes around the ranch. I also have a "last chance" North American Arms "derringer" style revolver. It also has interchangeable cylinders. If nothing else, it make you appreciate your other guns. :-) There's no trigger guard. It's single action. No safety. And to reload you actually have to pull the cylinder and then reinstall it (which requires slightly cocking the hammer). It scares the heck out of me, but it is small and with the magnum loads I suspect it could do okay close in if push came to shove. I tend towards revolvers instead of pistols, but I would like to get a Ruger or S&W .22 pistol to mess with. Max |

The Ruger 10/22 is not the only answer..... Terrific rifle, got one and wouldn't trade it for anything even remotely in the same value range.
The original post seems to point the cartridge, not the firearm. I agree wholeheartedly! Pick your brand and model, but make no mistake, the .22 is a remarkable firearm for defensive/survival/educational/recreational usage! Bob "1984" was NOT intended to be an instruction manual!

also with .22lr when it REALLY comes down to it you could use nailgun blanks and pellets or some other improvise bullet when or if all the real ammo is expended in stores.... tons of those lying around in every hardware store.... yea you can reload shotgun shells but eventually you'll run out of caps, press open a blank .22 and you can cast new bullets...
taking advantage of things other people might not think of using could be the difference in getting ahead, out, or staying alive |

im not sure bout this one, i am really digging my 17 hmr's ,very quiet great cal. with lot more punch, and at 100$ for a 500 round brick of hornady its hard to beat, not knocking the 22lr just giving some praise to the 17hmr.

I have always preached that EVER household should have a minimum of a shotgun, a pistol and a 22 rifle and that going through liife without those is negligent, stupid and dangerous.
I've got most any kind of gun you can imagine. I spend more time with my trigger finger in a 22lr than anything else on the planet. From wood bees to whitetail deer, I've downed it with a 22LR hollowpoint. And for people who scoff at its self defense capability, 90% of defense is showing your gun and "threatening" to use it. While anyone that looks down the bore of a 44 mag hogleg will be more impressed, I would say that something like a Ruger MK II or so or a 10/22 would be 90% of that. The OP said something about "2 rounds in the chest". If I had a 10/22 and used it for self defense, do you think I'd use just 2 rounds? I'd have an extended mag and put 5 or 6 in there faster than you could count them. One thing people often fail to consider is that while a 44mag is big and powerful, a 22 is accurate in that there is very, very little recoil. follow up shots are quick. While the 22 loses the advantage of power, it gains with follow up shots. I say appreciate ever cartridge for what it is. Too much emotional garbage and personal ego is put on too many guns and cartridges. That crap needs to go away. When TSHTF you'll use what you have and I pray you'll have what you need. -NR "I claim common law jurisdiction. uh noone was dogging the 22lr partner was simply stating a preference, an i could care less what everyone else has thats their preference, i have all you stated above as well as nfa weapons each one serves its own purpose, but i train tactics as well as weapons handling so im pretty confident in my skills, but the post wasnt putting down anything just opinion an i would put my 17hmr in any situation you put your 22lr in whether recoil accuracy noise or supply of ammo also size of game that each can put down, dont be so quick to judge partner i have plenty!

after rereading my post it sounds little aggressive, sorry for that have no need in getting in pissing contest with anyone was just trying to make point, anyway 22lr is classic an yes everyone should have a couple was simply stating how much i like the 17 is has same pros as 22 with added energy, it really is a great designed round hope ya get chance to play with one a little and see what you think, old classics can be improved lwrc done it on the ar platforms i can get 50000 75000 rounds thru my psd sbr an it still have integrity in the barrel also it will eat any ammo you feed it under any conditions an function with the reliablity of any ak design an im a long time ak fan, anyway hope we can agree to disagree lol
