I have been using windows XP for years, here is one of the tools available
It is a progrom called XPantispy, this program is used to shut off all of the services embedded in Windows XP. It also works in Vista and Windows 7. For downloads I usually go the authors site, I also trust majorgeeks, and filehippo.
I just reinstalled this program and my connection has become stable, no Windows services trying to and connecting all of the time.

Malwarebytes is a good program I have the free program on all of my windows O/S
