Home canned food and elevation change

Ways to store, can, smoke, dry, salt, or just to preserve foods.
PostPosted: Sun May 27, 2012 12:14 pm
My family is moving from 4700 ft above sea level to around 800 ft next week. We have a large amount of home canned foods, meats, jams, prepared food, you name it. What precautions if any do I need to take with the change of elevation?

you shouldn'[t have any issues. If it was the other way around, I would watch for signs of spoilage. Examine your cans and jar periodically for signs of spoilage. Good luck!

Folks...just a reminder. This is a HUGE difference in altitude and though the op should have no trouble, remember to always check your canned goods from time to time any ways. This should be a standard proceedure in maintaining your preps. We have hurricane and tornado season coming up and those weather events change the pressure in your home at times. Though there is little chance of anything happening, it's always good to just run a finger over your seals to make sure they are still in tact!

NO! problems, mmszbi when you move down in altitude. There is a possibility of issues when you move sealed items up in altitude. Among other things, I've seen powdered chocolate mix practically explode when I opened it up here Mile High.

I have made it a habit to check my home-canned food every time I'm in the basement...definitely worth the effort. In the past, I did find a couple jars with failed seals after a few weeks of sitting...I stopped buying that brand of lids(wal-mart brand) and stopped having a problem...

Well, to follow up, every thing made the move just great, not one single broken jar, my daughter did a fantastic job of packing them up. I had tons of the rings, so instead of boxing them up, I had her put a ring back onto every single jar....saved at least one more damn box to move.
i appreciate the replies, pretty sure there wouldn't be a problem, but can't hurt to ask. We have many many hours into the preparation of this food, just would hate to have lost any of it.
Another thing, we had a ton of frozen food, had some big coolers and dry ice, it made it ok, some thawed.....if you think you have enough dry ice....double the amount you think you need!

Thanks again!
