Ok, I've never fired a gun in my life (but I'm going to get an airrifle XD)
so I won't include that. 1) A map of the local area, including at least one town (so I know where to head). 2) A compass. 3) A really large bandana. 4) A large tarp. 5) Windy up torch. 6) A good quaility multi tool. 7) I'm torn between a lighter, a mangifying glass and a flint/steel combo. I think I'll go with the lighter, as the multi tool will have steel, and I'm sure I could find some flint. 8) The SAS survival guide, because I'm pretty sure I could live with the info from there. 9) A first Aid Kit. 0) Cable ties. Yes I would want these, as I can use them to build a zillion different things XD, most notably a shelter with the tarp. If I could add one thing it would be my SAS survival tin (home built). I can't add it as I would see it as several items. |

gregg, knife steel is far too soft to use with flint to get fire. flint and steel is different from the ferro-chromium rods sold as flint...with real flint the steel is what is shaved off to produce sparks and metal not hard enough won't generate the necessary heat when shaved off. besides, it'd ruin your knife quickly.
personally, i carry a real flint and steel set, along with magnifying lens, magnesium fire starter, several cigarette lighters, etc. you see, fire is one of the most important survival tools and, as such, i suggest carrying not less than 3 different ways to make it at all times. now, as to having never fired a gun... |

1 good knife (Bayonet for AR)
2 good gun (AR) and ammo 3 Rain poncho and liner (warmth and shelter) 4 maps of area 5 extra socks 6 fire starting items 7 canteen and cup 8 compass 9 flashlight 10 50 ft 550 cord. I have all of this (and more) ready to go at a moments notice. This all fits nicely on LBE equipment. Much more comfortable than a pack. In our area food is easy to find as far as edible plants and such. |

these are all very good answers and theres really nothing much to add if you're talking about survival kits. just to expand on the thread a little though, would your answer be any different for a bug out bag? for me, yes definetly. i guess i define bug out bag and "survival kit" as being two very different very seperate ideas. at least, i have each and i put very different things in them.
bug out bag, ie, not to go live out in the bush for a week outside of all society in a fend for your life situation....but rather to evacuate an area due to say flooding, hurricane, etc. you're going to a hotel or red cross shelter or friend/family's house. things are hairy....but global thermonuclear war is still a few steps away. 1. spare cash 2. soap/mouthwash/toothbrush 3. female products for the lady in your life. 4. cell phone charger 5. 3 season sleeping bag (the real small stuffable type) 6. razor/deoderant 7. good book you always meant to read 8. flashlight and spare batteries 9. small radio 10. concealed carry firearm |

In the case of "bugging out" and having to snatch my bag and run for the hills, these are my top 10 items (in the bag). Typical items, such as clothes, wallet/money/ID, cell phone, bandanna/handkercheif, etc... would already be on my person.
(Click on each item for links : ) 1. Becker BK7 Combat/Utility Knife 2. 550 Cord 3. Magnesium Fire Starter (and a couple of standard lighters : ) 4. MSR Miniworks Water Filter (would also grab a canteen) 5. First Aid Kit (185 pieces) - and throw in a Snake Bite Kit 6. Leatherman Core 7. Wilderness Survivors Guide (great reference on everything) 8. Pocket Chain Saw (nuff said, shnick shnick) 9. Map(s) and Compass 10. Pistol and ammo - preferrably a H&K USP40 or a Springfield 1911 Operator (both still on my wish list) No specific order really, because almost all items are equally important. Although, in any extreme survival situation, the knife and rope would be the 2 most useful (and possibly life saving) tools to have. |

Why is everybody carrying a compass but nobody has a map?
