In a shtf situation I would thing that diesel would be the best bov to have. One reason very dependable with any type of weather, also if there is ever a shortage of diesel you can make your own. On top of that diesel vehicles are normally truck so whatever supplies you need it could carrie it. What do you guys think?

Diesel, if you can get it for anything reasonable. Don't spend all of your prep money on one thing. I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear. MLK

Yeah, Ideally, you would want to find a Deutz Air-Cooled 2,3,or4 cyl, like on some contractor equipment, and put it in a small Manual Trans 4X4 pickup, like an old Toyota. No radiator, Mechanical injection - stupid simple. Zero electronics. Slow, but torquey, and will run on nearly any oil. Reason you want the 4X4 feature is not so much the 4X Drive, it is the Low Range option, for when the oil you are using is not as powerful.

HL, that sounds a lot like the conversions the bright boys in Cuba have figured out to keep their '50s era U.S. made cars running. Now those guys would have a lot to teach us about handling SHTF. I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear. MLK

Another Option for those who have the money - do a search on "Pinzgauer" or Volvo 1111

I'm definitely a diesel fan...but the "dependable with any type of weather" part I'm kind of scratching my head on. Am I missing something or is it that gas has some issue that diesel doesn't? Diesel starts to gel up when it gets colder...biodiesel even more so and I've been stuck before when the temp got down too low. Not to say that's a deal breaker as it was a relatively easy fix and I definitely think it's benefits far outweigh it's costs.

I can burn K1, K2, JP2, on road and off road diesel so I could easily find fuel anywhere from a farm to an airport. In fact when diesel was $5/gallon I found K2 for $3.45/gallon and burned it until diesel prices dropped back down. You just can't do that in a new CRD, only the old 7.3 strokers, 5.9 12V, etc can do it.
