I've been a competitive powerlifter for about 15 years now. So, strength is not really an issue. However, I have decided to incorporate a daily stretching routine as well as increasing my cardio vascular work to daily rather than my normal three days per week. Also going to cut my daily calories down gradually from 6,000 p/day to around 4,800 to drop a few pounds. I think being around 270 - 280 would serve me better than my current weight of 300 if SHTF.

It takes a lot of calories to maintain the beef folks put on. IMO, the less calories your body needs, the better once SHTF. You won't need to eat as much to maintain muscle and strength. This isn't as much of an issue if you've prepped for this, but if things went for a prolonged period of time you may eventually run out of food and so your calorie intake will be significantly reduced. So if SHTF, and lasted 10 years, I hope folks getting beefed up have prepped for 10 years worth of the same calorie intake.

While I understand what you are saying and don't totally disagree, the human body is an amazing creation. It has the ability to adapt to most anything we do to it. While I fully realize there is no way I would be able to continue taking in the amount of calories I currently take in if SHTF, I also realize that my body would quickly adapt to a lower kcal volume. Additionally, your body will take nutrients it needs from muscle mass and any stored fat.

I'm new enough to it that i don't call it 'excercise' yet. i call it 'getting off my fat ***'.

i've got a serious back issue, which stems from multiple causes (acts which hurt it, years of lethargy, lack of conditioning, poor nutrition, 40 extra pounds on my frame, etc, etc). And i know i need to fix it.

so about 2 to 3 months ago... wait, no... wow, it's been 5 months now, I started walking /stretching more, and being a lot more attentive to my nutrition and eating habits. I'm still only walking, but i can touch the floor now when i bend over to stretch my back out. that may not sound impressive to you super-troopers out there, but to me it's frigging awesome to feel that floor at my fingertips. Also, instead of the once or twice a week i started out with, i'm easily doing it 5-7 times a week. i get up in the morning, downstairs for about ten minutes of stretching to wake up, then out the door for a fast walk aroudn a 2 mile circuit in the neighborhood. Sometimes, i do only do 1 mile, but that's a time-crunch thing if i need it.

soon i will advance to phase two which i've realized is a necessity, as all the easy work has been done. phase two will consist of turning some of those minutes spent walking into actual running. (i think i'm going to do 'sprinting', because i know i frigging hate long distance running (i used to do a lot of it, and never once liked it. sprinting is much less monotonous to me.) I'm also going to start lifting weights and... well let me clarify that... in an attempt to keep it non-monotonous (which is VERY important to my interest in it), i've been collecting large rocks for throwing in my back yard, large stumps for dragging and pushing around. I've got the makings for balance beams and the like as well...

that gets into the fact that there's a whole plan for my pt regimine, but i know myself well enough to know that i shouldn't just jump right into ALL of it, biting off more than i can chew. Also, back when i *was* in good shape, i was a firm believer in non-traditional, non-repetitive, non-standardized activities... weight rooms are fantastically boring and horrible places. I'd much rather 'throw a big rock' as excercise.

and while it's not PT, i'll mention again my changes in eating habits. A LOT more fruits and veggies, proper portion control, nothing in major excess. I'm not going crazy with that, as my wife is a frigging awesome cook and it's hard not to get seconds most times. I also still like a good beer., so i'm not going to teh extreme end on that, just paying more attention to it.

It's been good.

Great work avmech!
"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."
- Samuel Adams
