I've had a bad sinus infection and was prescribed a z-pak and nasal spray from my nurse practitioner. It now seems to have settled in my chest and I have a terrible cough. Rather than make a trip back into town for another exam I decided to try a homemade cough syrup. I made it this morning and it is supposed to sit for 8 hours or overnight before use. I am going to take a dose before bedtime and will report back on how it does. Here is the recipe if someone wants to try it. I also added a teaspoon of granulated garlic to the recipe.

Onion Syrup

1 C Chopped Onion (fresh)
1/4 C Lemon Juice
1 tsp. Ginger Root (optional - fresh is best, but I used powdered)
Enough honey to cover

Place onion, lemon juice and ginger (a friend used garlic too - I think it was a wonderful addition). Cover with honey. Stir to remove the air bubbles and cover. Let sit overnight or 8 hours.

The honey will suck the juices out of the onion. After sitting overnight, strain out the onion solids (or you can munch on them if you prefer).

Dosage: Child (7 - 11 years) 1 tsp. every 3-4 hours
Adult 1 TBL. every 3 - 4 hours

Here is another recipe that I plan to make. It can be canned and stored.

Cold Remedy
2 cups lemon juice
2 cups cider vinegar
2 tsp cayenne pepper
2 cups honey
Ginger - powdered, paste or fresh. I used 2 tbls paste
Garlic - powdered, fresh or chopped in a jar. I used 2 tbsp powdered

Put all in a pan and heat to mix and combine. Jar it up and process in the water bath for 15 min.

Good suggestions, Mamma Bear. The one I have used for years is garlic cloves marinated in honey. Good for colds and respiratory infections.

I have to caution folks on taking antibiotics for sinus infection. All that (even multiple doses of strong) antibiotics do is kill the weak bacteria. What do you think that leaves in your sinus? I recommend a modified Dakin's Solution for sinus infection. Fill a coffee cup about 3/4 full of warm water, add; 1/2 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp baking soda, and about 5 drops of Clorox (sodium hypochlorite 6%). Fill a cleaned nose spray bottle and spray both nostrils at least three times per day until sinus infection is gone. When treating severe sinus infections, it could take a week of treatment to completely eliminate the infection. I recommend that the solution be made fresh each day of use.

Here's a remedy for you....now I KNOW it sounds lethalbut you only WANT to die and that for just a while here goes

Mix a moderately stiff Bloody Mary.
Put about 6 blankets on the bed.
Draw a tub as HOT as you can possably tolerate.
Into the bloody mary mix 3 heaping teaspoons of black and 3 heaping teaspoons of cayanne pepper.
Get in the tub and soak
As soon as you notice the water is starting to cool off get out of the tub, towel off, toss down the bloody mary and go hop, under the blankets

I gurantee that by morning you will have sweat that cold out.

You are so right in cautioning the overuse of antibiotics. I have not used any in several years so I hope I am not over doing it with the zpak. My sinus infection seems to be gone but whatever I have settled in my chest. It probably doesn't help that I smoke.

Thanks for the solution for sinus infection. I am printing it off and putting it in my Home Remedy Book. Do you just spray it in your nostrils or do you sniff it up in there also?

I took my first dose of the Onion Syrup last night. Had a good nights sleep. Did not wake myself coughing. I don't know if the antibiotic kicked in or if the syrup is doing wonders and blunders. I feel much better today. Just took another dose. If you make this be prepared for very strong onion breath. Makes you want to rush to the bathroom to use mouthwash! OH well...If you are snotting and coughing, no one is going to be wanting a kiss from you anyway! :D

Just spray...If your nose is very congested, you might have to spray two or three times (each dose of at least three times per day) and blow your nose after each spray.

The fact that your sinus infection is improved simply means that most of the bacteria involved were the weak ones this time around.

I get sinus problems when people mow the lawns or when we don't get any rain for a while. Mine is more pollen and junk. Never seen a doc about it but I figured it only happens ever so often during mainly spring and summer months. I'll just turn on the humidifier for a few hours at night and sleep like a baby, vics vapor rub work good for me. But I guess these aren't really cold remedies. Drink plenty of clear fluids to keep your kidneys flushed. Wash your hands often! If you use an electric toothbrush swap to a disposable until your no longer sick so your not keeping germs on that. Use Lysol on everything first day of sickness and when sickness breaks. Keep a tissue in your pocket to open doors with or use sanitation wipes so your not spreading germs to others in the house.
