At least seven US state attorneys general are investigating whether Monsanto Company has abused its market power to lock out competitors and raise prices on seed. Iowa, Illinois, Ohio, Texas, Virginia, and two other unidentified states are in a working group to investigate the biotech giant.

The states are probing whether Monsanto violated laws by offering rebates to seed distributors for excluding rival seeds, imposing limits on combining the product with other genetic modifications, or offering cash incentives to switch farmers to more expensive generation of seed varieties.

The state investigations add to pressure on Monsanto. The US Justice Department is investigating the company's marketing practices, and DuPont Company has accused Monsanto of anti-competitive practices in licensing litigation.

Daniel Sokol, a law professor at the University of Florida and expert on antitrust matters, told Bloomberg News that a state-level investigation on top of the federal probe "can lengthen the lawsuit and potential settlements and can increase uncertainty and costs for Monsanto."

It might be too late for the year, crop producing wise.
This well placed and politically influential corporation has been untethered and unleashed for too long.
Furthermore they have ruined many Farmers lives and devistated the family owned farming business. Monsanto has lead they way in creating victimless crimes, and using vague laws to further their aganda in their goal of a geneticly altered plants and an eventual monopoly on the "types of crops" the Gov wants people to plant.

"I am a most unhappy man. I have unwittingly ruined my country. A great industrial nation is now controlled by its system of credit. We are no longer a government by free opinion, no longer a government by conviction and the vote of the majority, but a government by the opinion and duress of a small group of dominant men." -- Woodrow Wilson 1919

Any further word on this? Farmers in India are committing suicide over Monsanto's actions, seed failures, and destitution.....then Maggie Thatcher and her hubby seem to go on in with the Rothschilds and are buying up tons of land from these ppl. I for one would love to see the Monsanto board of directors hang for the millions of lives they have ruined.......not to mention the harm they are causing to billions of us with GMO food, and the epidemic of GMO infestation of all plant species that is happening.

Thousands of Haitians angry against Monsanto

Anniston residents march against alleged corruption

March organizer Glen Ray speaks to a crowd on the Steps of the Calhoun County Courthouse
Carrying signs and a life-size cutout of President Barack Obama, several dozen people met at Zinn Park Friday for a march to the courthouse in Anniston to protest what they call corruption in local government.

"Satan, we're going to tear your kingdom down," the 50 or so marchers sang, in a protest led by local resident Glen Ray, along with local minister Roosevelt Parker and Anniston City Councilman Ben Little. The protesters, including several children, marched around the courthouse seven times to protest the spending of the settlement money won in a lawsuit against the Monsanto Corporation for PCB contamination in Anniston. Protesters also expressed concern about the wrangling over the former military fort, McClellan, as well as alleged police and judicial corruption that treats black residents unfairly.

"You don't know how it is to go in the courthouse black," said Glen Ray, the coordinator of the protest. "You go in the courthouse black, you already got a sentence."

Rain fell on the marchers intermittently as they made their trek around the building, but it didn't dampen the spirits of those marching. Some walked with canes, a concession to illnesses they say were a product of PCB contamination, and were eager to tell their stories.

Jimmy Bledsoe and his wife, Gloria, received $3,000, less than they feel they were entitled to from the settlement.

"My back, legs, my head hurts," he said. "It got in my lungs and stuff, and they give me medicine for that."

His wife says her head aches because of the contamination.

"Sometimes, I can't hardly think right," she said. "I just want our money, and you know that's right, 'cause people need their money, and some people didn't live to see it, to get their money."

Although they were unsure how much money they should have received, the Bledsoes want the money to help themselves and their church, they said.

Some blamed Circuit Judge Joel Laird, who heard the Monsanto case, for their low level of compensation from the settlement.

"Judge Laird has done us so wrong," said Terry Pugh as he walked to the courthouse. "We haven't gotten our money. We're supposed to get $10,000 a year."

Efforts Friday to reach Laird were unsuccessful.

A few politicians, including Weaver mayor and candidate for state representative, Garry Bearden, showed up to express their support for the marchers.

"We're all interested in equality and fairness and judicial correctness," Bearden said. "Judicial correctness is something that we all need. It doesn't matter whether you're black or white."

Most of the protesters, however, were black, and the speakers were speaking directly to them.

"McClellan is in Anniston; McClellan should be ruled by Anniston citizens and the government of Anniston," said Ralph Bradford, a businessman and political activist who spoke to the protesters on the courthouse steps. "In Cal-houn County, African Americans are 17 percent of the population in the county. In Anniston, we are 50-plus percent of the population. So, they took away (property) that belongs to the majority population here in Anniston and put it in the county where we become the minority."

Councilman Little, who has filed several lawsuits against the authorities organized to manage the McClellan property, also spoke to the crowd.

"You are here to send a message to everyone in this courthouse, across this city and throughout the county," he said. "You are sick and tired of being sick and tired, fed up with the corruption that has gone on in this county and this community for so long, and the judges that are on this seat is not doing their job. They need to go."

It's all about justice, said Harry Ray, whose brother organized the event. Blacks in the community have not received equal treatment for a long time, he said.

"The injustice in this community has been going on for 40 or 50 years," Harry said. "That's why I'm marching. Maybe somebody can open their eyes and find out that everybody in Anniston, Alabama, is not pleased with the situation."

Remember your rant Johnny? It falls in right about here. ALL they want is $$, while the $$ will help them to pay medical bills, buy medication, etc it doesn't change the fact that they're fixated on the money and not necessarily on seeing TPTB in the corporation hang. In situations like this you need BOTH a monetary settlement and a complete corporate lynching to make things right.

Sad, they sold themselves for 10k....how pathetic......and then their crying over the money.....not about the incredible harm done to them, or their illness/ailments.

Farmers wary of hybrid maize seed imports
http://www.caribbeanlifenews.com/articl ... rotest.txt
By Tequila Minsky

The donated seeds are hybrid and farmers fear they are being given seeds that will threaten local varieties. In addition, the seeds require special handling due to their chemical treatment.

"We have to fight for our local seeds," Chavannes Jean-Baptist told the crowd. "We have to defend our food sovereignty."

Jean-Baptiste, coordinator of one of the leading Haitian peasant organizations, Mouvman Peyizan Papay-MPP, charged that the Haitian government is using the earthquake to sell the country to the multinationals.

The marchers stopped at an MPP farm along the route and planted 250 seedlings of orange, lemon and avocado trees and symbolically sowed about 10 pounds of maize seed.

Five peasant groups collaborated on the demonstration rallying under a hot sun in the Central Plateau town of Hinch.

Solidarity and support groups from Canada, Brazil, Dominican Republic, and the U.S. joined in the march, including retired organic farmer from Massachusetts,Samuel Smith, who came for the rally.

"This is not just about the seeds," he said, "It's about imposing on people a system that they can't get out of."

"If you let Monsanto seeds enter the country this is the same scenario that willhappen again, as the eradication of the creole pig that ruined the Haitian farmers in the '80s," said David Millet, French agronomist working with MPP as a volunteer.

American expertise dictated killing the Haitian pig, a way for the introduction of the American pig -- an unsuccessful program with pigs not adapted to the Haitian environment, Millet explained.

Monsanto however dismissed fears taht it was donating genetically modified seeds to the country.

"The seeds Monsanto is donating to Haiti are not genetically modified. They are conventional hybrid seeds that are already grown in the Dominican Republic," a Monsanto spokesman in the United States told AFP.

Monsanto has donated $255,000 to Haiti for disaster relief and the company is committed to the success of Haitian farmers, Monsanto Executive Vice President Jerry Stein wrote in a letter to Agriculture Minister Joanas Gue.

The "gift of death," which is actually being sold to the farmers is:an attack on peasant agriculture, on the farmers, on biodiversity, on native seeds, on what remains of our environment in Haiti, Jean-Baptiste says.

There was a symbolic burning of the seeds at the rally.

Many protestors leveled most of their anger against the government.Their banner read:Down with Industrial Agriculture/Agrofuels, Jatropha, and Coca Cola.

The banner also said: Monsanto means death to native seeds, peasant agriculture, and poison for the earth, water, air, people, and animals. Monsanto means destruction of biodiversity, dependence on food. Peasant seeds mean food sovereignty, agriculture that cools the plant, respect for mother earth, guarantee for health and life for coming generations.

I hear Haitians are burning the seeds. Probably the best thing they could do. Canada was the unknowing test market for GMO for 10 yrs before they were even heard of. Now 66% of Canadians will die End up with Cancer...one of the highest in the world......and then you realize why they were "given" nationalized health care just before the secret tests began. Tracking and monitoring to make sure it would kill ppl off.

Judge Revokes Approval of Modified Sugar Beets

By ANDREW POLLACK
Published: August 13, 2010

A federal district court judge revoked the government's approval of genetically engineered sugar beets Friday, saying that the Agriculture Department had not adequately assessed the environmental consequences before approving them for commercial cultivation.

The decision, by Judge Jeffrey S. White of Federal District Court in San Francisco, appears to effectively ban the planting of the genetically modified sugar beets, which make up about 95 percent of the crop, until the Agriculture Department prepares an environmental impact statement and approves the crop again, a process that might take a couple of years.

The decision could cause major problems for sugar beet farmers and sugar processors. In the past the sugar industry has warned there might not be enough non-engineered seeds available. However, the judge ruled that crops currently in the ground can be harvested and made into sugar, so the effects will not be felt until next spring's planting season.

Beets supply about half the nation's sugar, with the rest coming from sugar cane. Sugar beet growers sold the 2007-8 crop for about $1.335 billion, according to government data.

The decision came in a lawsuit organized by the Center for Food Safety, a Washington advocacy group that opposes biotech crops.

Judge White ruled last September that the Agriculture Department's approval of the beets violated the National Environmental Policy Act, but he did not specify a remedy. Earlier this year, he denied a request by the plaintiffs to prohibit the planting of the engineered seeds this year, saying that would be too disruptive. But he warned farmers to move toward using conventional seeds.
