dang, that's a lotta tuna...we probably go through one can a month. with 19 cans on hand, plus 5 foil packs, that puts us at a 2 year supply. with an average date of 3 years, if we rotate properly we can still stock 50% more than we have without risking waste. 58 cents a can is a good price(assuming 6% tax), makes me wish I had an aldi's around. Glad you bumped this up, lots of newbies who could benefit from this idea...I sure did.

I think the 5 dollar a day price is a little off. Not sure about where y'all live but the average can of soup here is about a dollar or more a can and if your going to buy 4 and then salt on top of that for a week your 5 dollars is looking more like 7-8 maybe. Looks like a great plan though and a very good way to purchase with little money. I spent over 100 dollars today at the store and didn't really get much food prices are just getting out of controll. Some food was for storage but mainly food for the next few weeks or so it will last me. My biggest expense is the kashi bars I buy there about 3-4 dollars a box depending on where I buy them and I buy 6 at a time last for a few months I eat them for breakfast or as snacks it's a lot healthier.

Hear is a similar system I found a couple years ago, and it has been updated for inflation and such.

Hi Txtreeman.
Since the first post was in 2007, it is pretty much right in line. Back then 5 lbs of sugar was 85 cents, it is around $3 now. To keep in line with this way of prepping the amount you spend should be closer to $15 per week. 4 years ago soup was under 50 cents a can. I try not to buy any now. Most things are 2 or 3 times more than they were then. I know that I have a years worth of food but I doubt it would last that long when the SHTF unless I can guard it and ration it. Some people eat dumb. By that I mean they will eat a whole can of meat and nothing else. A small can of meat can make a meal for 6 when used with other foods and balancing the diet. Firefly5555

You're right about the need for balance firefly5555, but in my case I'm only feeding 3. Aldi has some of the best prices I've found for many canned goods and produce. I picked up 6 cans of tomato soup for 59 cents a can (12 oz). The also have cream of chicken, cream of mushroom and cream of celery for 59 cents as well. Dollar Tree has 28 oz cans of tomato soup, diced or stewed tomatoes for a dollar a can.
