bugging out, like any other decision made in a shtf circumstance, would not be a decision made lightly.to leave your food and other survival supplys that you have stocked up on for a long durration would be a last resort.
BUT,if you face a situation where you KNOW that you will not come out on top.such as a number of hostiles greater than you can defend against,a near by dam threatning to breach, huricane heading your way,etc.....you have no choice but to bug out. after all,the items you stocked to survive are not worth imenent death. |

If a person remains within urban areas, then that means that is that many more people you can help and you can have really big group hugs. I'm thinking that if things go really bad, instead of merely hunkering down in the nice suburbs, I should go to Seattle to share the warmth.

Where are you really going to run to? If you try to BUG out close to the start of the epic ordeal it will sink you stuck out on the road away from your heaviest stuff where you won't have resources to manage an assault. The last couple of times during IKE and another hurricane down here on the coast, my friends wound up stuck on the highway. They called me asking for a ride till their phones ran out of power. We were busy in the back yard cooking and enjoying a quiet meal with two good dogs and an UZI sitting next to us.

Bugging is, of course, a last resort situation. You aren't going to "bug out" if where you are is safe, but not matter where you are, events may occur that make your current dwelling a undesirable place to be.

I agree bugging out is a last resort, not my first answer and there are reasons even with the most secure place you can get that you may have to bug out or die.

Bugging out should be a last resort. You should stockpile supplies so sheltering in place would be a viable option. You should only bug out if remaining in your home becomes an immediate risk to your life. Watch the jistory channel special "After Armageddon". If your situation is like the one presented in the show then bugging out is your best bet, or if you were in a situation like Katrina where your house might well flood you should leave. Other than that shelter in place. But only you know what your prepared for do what is necessary to keep yourself safe

Planning on Bug-In and totally prepared with rotating stock of water and rations. Stocked with essential meds and have neighbours planning same. In worse case scenario we do have a Bug-Out plan and would make our move in a caravan of 4x4's and full size 12 passenger van but would wait till things calm down. Our fire power and previous trainnings along with our individual careers as a group do afford us a high success rate and make for a formidable group if it came to it. We are planning a northern push into the mountains and on a cleared or somewhat cleared road are looking at a 6 hr ride but I think with a complete collapse of government and society we can kick the speed up a notch, keep formation tight and make it in 4 1/2 hrs.

Me and mine are staying in. If we have to leave it will be because of extreme safety concerns, and I've a few spots picked out to head to, and those keep evolving. I consider it evacuating rather than bugging out. Where I happen to be may get pretty bad, but I don't think it will be THAT bad. With some adjustments to routine and security measures, I think we'll be OK. I personally find it my job, as a prepper and former service member, to step up and try to lead my community, starting with my neighborhood, to be able to survive and hopefully recover/prosper. It's not a small town, but it's not some huge metropolis either. It is my intention to work with local police and other former service members to help organize security SOP, build a militia if deemed needed, and help residents stay on their feet as much as we can.
