For those of you who are near the coast, you might consider getting a sail boat as BOV. We sailed around the world on a 50' Catamaran and met many people living for years at a time on a boat as small as 27', families of 4 and 5 can do well on a 38' to 45' sloop. In my humble opinion if you have the means and you are near the ocean having a sail boat would be the ultimate BOV.

A boat is a good idea and the right size boat can get you to a lot of places in many countries thru locks and water ways...however, if the emergency is a huricane, all bets are off! lol

Herbalpagan,
If all we had to worry about is a Hurricane or two that is something that can be dealt with unfortunately our problems are far more troubling. |

Too true. Of course, now there are pirates in some areas and I'm thinking that will become more prevelant as things get worse.

Herbalpagan,
Piracy could be an issue but it depends on where you are starting from and where you are going. In a real SHTF time to bug out situation a sail boat gives you a lot of options. If you live in the Pacific Northwest I would suggest the inland passage between Canada and Alaska, in the spring, summer and fall. Wintering there would be difficult but not impossible and you would be able to keep a low profile until the situation stabilizes. The east coast presents a different problem, I would suggest the central Caribbean as a remote safe place to wait out whatever the problem is. There are very few things that time will not fix and even in a worst case situation, some form of stability will eventually come about it all depends on what that stability will look like and how long things will take to stabilize. If the U.S. were to suffer a catastrophic nuclear attack you want to be as far away as possible, possibly forever. Should a nationwide EMP attack take place you might be able to safely return in 3 to 5 years with the same time frame for a bio attack. In the event of a bio attack leaving might be your ONLY salvation, give the pathogen several years to burn itself out and it should be safe to return. Should the country suffer a complete melt down and civil war erupt, it will not last forever and after a few years you should know who won and if you even want to return. A sail boat offers a lot of options. |

Now, while I agree that a boat is a very viable option (and my husband would be thinking a person who could get me on a boat is up for Sainthood), I would think that it presents a whole different set of issues.
Food Storage would be my main concern. Certainly, you could not carry as large a supply. Where would you get what you need? Considering the economic crisis that is going to hit, will hit all over the world, what currency woud you use? (keeping in mind that most are not set to have plenty of gold and silver-which would make yo ua target any how) Growing fresh veggies - no garden space Banking/money - making/banking etc Emergency healthcare what to do? While on a homestead, there is plenty to do to alleviate boredom, what does one do on a boat? Can you tell I'm not a boat person? lol On a mountain top in western Mass.

I like your thinking, but around here I would have to haul it on a trailer.
(Or park it in the yard, wait for the flood, or How long can you tread water?) What was the Kevin Costner movie where he was sailing around on a Catamaran after the TEOTWAWKI? My basic tool rules:
Deploy your assets, if you spread them out no one know how many you really have............................ Redundant calibers are just another asset........... Have passed, "need", along time ago......... Invest in airplanes and firearms, never women or cars....... Precious metals..........Brass and lead...... The more you know, the less you have to carry....... SHTF Militia Good site; http://www.survivalblog.com/ |

Waterworld. I do believe he drinks his own urine in that movie.

Yes and now the astronauts in the space station do the same and your point is? |

I could have done without seeing it. And I just don't think I could bring myself to do that unless I absolutely had to. I realize thats basically how our water treatment works now, just on a large scale, but ...
