Ahmm..
Incidentally, Ultra Light Aircraft have an "overall Weight" limit. Not a Cargo weight Limit. .. To Quote The FAA:: ... Aircraft falling within the U.S. ultralight specifications are extremely lightweight (less than 254 pounds if powered, or 155 pounds if un-powered), are intended for manned operation by a single occupant, have a fuel capacity of five U.S. gallons or less, a maximum calibrated airspeed of not more than 55 knots, and a maximum stall speed of not more than 24 knots. Ultralight aircraft in the U.S. do not require pilot licensing, medical certification, or aircraft registration. .. But there is also the Sport Aircraft Category (A lot more capacity): ... Aircraft certified as light-sport aircraft exceed the limitations defined for ultralight aircraft and require that the pilot possess, at a minimum, a Sport Pilot certificate. Among these aircraft were found those that were specifically designed to meet the LSA requirements, as well as overweight ultralights (commonly known as "fat ultralights") that previously were operated in technical violation of 14 CFR 103. ... Now the point: I have an associate who owns an Ultra Light Pilot Training center (which just happens to be the airfield where one of my BOL is located - and the bunker/Community Complex). - Ultralight trainers have an extended capacity of an additional 155 lbs take off weight. This means you can take 155 lbs of "stuff" - Like that Browning and 2500 rounds to return fire (just poking redneck humor your way...). Operating an Ultralight two seat trainer does require a light-sport pilots license (essentially a medical card and basic flight training). Not really hard to get, but does require a basic physical that is a lot less stringent than a regular sport pilots license. But should you have a trainer and fly it in a time of emergency, I think the chances of getting an FAA NOTAM in the mail is highly unlikely, and the chances that the so called "FAA Police Patrol" is gonna chase you down is even less likely. .. But the sport pilot aircraft can also be Short take Off and Landing (STOL) and almost match the ultralight in take off and landing capacity/characteristics. With up to 750 lbs of passenger/cargo capacity you can haul a lot. .. But the main requirement here would be:::: Do You have a yard big enough to get airborne, and do you have enough clearance to clear those high voltage lines at the edge of your property? The the ultimate requirement: Do you actually have a discrete landing spot and a place to stash the aircraft away from prying eyes flying around upstairs? ... Ultralights and Sport Light weights would indeed make excellent bug out transportation... They also make great recon transports as well.... .. As for pot shots? I don't think it is such a concern. Flying at even 45 miles per hour (ground speed) They have about 10 seconds to think, realize what you are, figure out where you are coming from (or are) and then to figure out what direction you are going, then deciding when to shoot... And they are probably doing it under stress as well... Seriously, people have accidents all the time because they are too busy thinking about that person that just turned in front of them 100-50 feet ahead, and while they are thinking they hit them.... I don't think anyone with a gun is gonna be taking too many pot shots, or at least any accurate ones.... .... Duck hunters would be a possible threat, but hunters would more likely be preppers, not zombies. They would also not be wasting precious ammo on something that they can't take home for dinner either, at least not anyone intelligent. ... But Ultralights as a bug our transport - I'm on board (but mine is a bell ranger hupshavea (german for whirly bird). It isn't per say a STOL its more of a VTOL (Vertical Take Off and Landing)... .. That's pretty cool, Dataman. Of course, when the SHTF, you won't have to worry about the FAA's "requirements". And if you can get up to 10,000 feet, who's gonna shoot at you? You're out of range of most rifles. Even a .50 BMG isn't accurate that far out (up?).
By the way, the colors for the underside ought to be Light Ghost Gray (FS 36375) and Dark Ghost Gray (FS 36320) With those colors judiciously applied to the underside, your bird should just about dissappear in most conditions (including clear blue sky). The Air Force tested a color called Air Superiority Blue on the F-15 a few years back and discovered that most shades of blue were actually MORE visible than other colors. They actually seemed to glow. That's probably not a good effect if you're trying to go unnoticed. “We, the people are the rightful masters of both Congress and the courts, not to overthrow the Constitution, but to overthrow men who pervert the Constitution.” ~ Abraham Lincoln

I would not even consider that a viable option.......no cargo, limited range, no protection.......Not for me.
My basic tool rules:
Deploy your assets, if you spread them out no one know how many you really have............................ Redundant calibers are just another asset........... Have passed, "need", along time ago......... Invest in airplanes and firearms, never women or cars....... Precious metals..........Brass and lead...... The more you know, the less you have to carry....... SHTF Militia Good site; http://www.survivalblog.com/ |
