This is one of the purchases we are thinking about for the future. Though we don't plan to bug out, our back up location could be gotten to easily with an ATV. I'm still not sure I want to pay that much for an alternate vehicle that can't be driven on many roads.
On a mountain top in western Mass.

Have 3, one on site, 2 at home and paid for next month. Not a good bov in my mind because it wont carry shi@ if you need to. Roughly 80 lbs on front rack, and 150 to 180 on rear. Including on your back, front rack, rear combined, maybe 400 lbs. Now, prioritize and position that 400 lbs.
Mine are 450s and get about 20 mpg with a 4+ gallon tank. Can you get out fast? Hell yea, and dodge some bullets on the way, you just wont be able to take too much with you at the time. I believe this is one of the most important tools you can have in a shtf scenario. Need to go to the creek or pond for water? You can walk it and carry the water at approximately 8.5 lbs per gallon, or you can ride it. Kill a deer or hog?. You can carry or drag it back, or you can ride it back. Please look at buying a cheap used atv in decent condition, and have a means to transport it to your bol. Know what you want to use it for. Winches are king. Cut a tree down? You can cut it up in the thicket, or you can drag it into the open to cut it up. Many many functions for an atv in the after life. Get one, buy it used, buy it cheap, know and have a spare plug and oil for it, oil, etc. Maybe if you need to cut the tree down, you need it to fall a certain direction. Winch! Be prepared. Is the Boy Scout Motto, and should be for all preppers. I am thankful to have been a scout, taught me so much stuff that I still use to this day. Get your sons and daughters involved in scouts if not already. |

Where I grew up we had tractors. Used the tractors for everything. ATV's are like fast little tractors. They are incredibly versatile and fun!

2007 Arctic Cat 650 H1, while not exactly what it's rated for it will carry 150lbs on the front rack, 200lbs on the rear and another 250lbs in one of those Harbor Freight class III hitch carriers (with a bit of reinforcement). I've has it loaded down well beyond it's rated capacities with no issues. If I'm at home here on the mountain (which means another week), it's my primary BOV. It will go places my Ram 2500 could never fit. I've had it on hills steep enough I had to hang over the bars to keep it from going end over end and with a 3K winch front, 2K winch rear and chains for all 4's I haven't found anything that stops it up here.

ATVs are great for all the uses listed. You could even get a cheap trailer from Harbor Freight and modify just a bit (for more ground clearance/etc) and carry quite a bit. Don't worry about not being allowed on roads, if the SHTF it won't really matter that much. Most of the LE folks will be tied up with perimeter control or in the city for looters/etc. I have an old, early 90's Kawasaki and a cheap HF trailer (and a lawn trailer) that I use on the deer lease. I haul wood, deer stands, you name it. Once the AF allows me to move to my final home I will look at getting another used one. Again, a great tool!

Spent a lot of years plowing snow and mowing grass and trails with '95 Suzuki, then move up to a tractor.
Suzuki now retired to ...fun. They are great and if telling DW that one is needed for a BOV, go for it. I quit tyring to justify stuff I want, I just do it. PS I'm thinking they arn't reall all the convenient as a BOV, won't carry enough....juast loading up for a day of hunting show you how little they reall carry. I would prefer and older Jeep CJ.......... My basic tool rules:
Deploy your assets, if you spread them out no one know how many you really have............................ Redundant calibers are just another asset........... Have passed, "need", along time ago......... Invest in airplanes and firearms, never women or cars....... Precious metals..........Brass and lead...... The more you know, the less you have to carry....... SHTF Militia Good site; http://www.survivalblog.com/ |
