I have been wanting a true 4 wheel drive vehicle that can carry 4 passengers comfortably and have room for some gear. The price of a true 4WD has been out of my grasp until yesterday. I have ended up buying a 1996 Land Rover with a V-8, automatic, power steering, 4 WD, new alternator, new power steering unit and has all current inspection and Licenses. I picked it up for $1600.00 from a friend who had bought it , did some fixing up and was planning to sell it. I did not need another vehicle, having two cars, a truck, and two motorcycles already in the household, but to get a vehicle I wanted as a BOG and old enough and cheap enough I can do some mods and not really care how it looks.
I have been telling friends I am working with local movie makers who make horror movies, post apocalyptic and zombie movies and looking to rent stuff out or loan for some on camera time as an extra. It has been helpful to explain some of the things I wanted made or desired to have and while they think I am quirky, it does not really ring any alarms and they have been helpful in getting me stuff or making it at a decent price. Things like ram bumper, extra lights, specialty tools, etc. Since they have seen Hummingbird’s and my face in the papers and on the news in relation to the horror movies and zombie walks it just happens to help our cover a bit.
I am considering setting up the Land Rover as a Zombie Squad type vehicle and sit it around the haunted houses locally etc. and of course I will make it available for local producers making those type of films as back ground. It lets me be quirky, add some interesting ideas to my vehicle and not overly worry neighbors or local LEO’s, just that crazy Wulfin and his woman playing zombie movies again.
Anyway, I was wondering may have experience with Land Rovers and what are things I should watch out for, or try with it? Are there known problem parts I should stock up on, and has anyone tried any mods on their vehicles which has worked out well for them?

Since it's for doing movie stuff I should be able to do a lot of mods without making people freak when they see it.

"Old Man Emu" is a Speed/Mod shop for parts and ideas of how far you can take it without having to resort to Machine shops...

If it is the 3.5 liter V-8, it started out life as a Oldsmobile Motor, IIRC. It was OEM/Standard in Triumphs, Morgans, Rovers, Land Rovers, many KitPlanes, and more - and it is the Engine longest in production since the VW Flat Four. There are performance parts for that motor still available new from several sources in the U.S.

Keep us posted about movies it stars in!

Don't know about Land Rovers, except my friend, who knows more about cars than anyone I know, loves them and recently had one. it was one TOUGH truck ! It was an early 60's model though, and may not relate too directly to yours. Personally, my bOV is an Isuzu Trooper 2, sort of a poor man's Land Rover. ($800). I recently had the head gasket replaced, and at the same time, had the timing belt replaced, as well as the water pump, alternator, and a few other items, so it should be good to go for a while. It is a 4-cyl gasoline model with a 5 speed manual tranny, and gets about 24 mpg in 2WD, less than 20 in 4WD, but satisfactory.

If you can find a guy named 'Disco Mike' (Disco is short for Discovery not the dead music) He used to be a Rover Mechanic and knows just about everything there is to know about the beasts. He helped me troubleshoot some issues with my '01 Disco II over the phone and he got it right 99% of the time.

If you have the air suspension, that is the first thing I would ditch. They give everyone nothing but problems. I think your year might NOT have them, but it's a good thing to check. The front drive shaft on the DII's can snap loose. The front diff is located below the a/c unit and drips onto the hot joint causing the grease to burn off (or something like that) you can replace them with a sealed unit for around $300.

Most of these issues are the '99-up Discovery II's. I'm juts throwing some things out there that you might want to look at. Other than having an under-powered V8 and sloppy brakes, I love my DII. Enjoy it!
There are three kinds of men: The ones that learn by reading. The few who learn by observation. The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence.

Thanks for the info, am looking forward to maybe doing some camera work as I start to modify her. Gotta think of a name. Sine I know a decent machinist and welder might do some mods which while practicle might detract form ehr looks (like 5 gal fuel holder on back If space with spare tire there.
Going through gear today and deciding which cases should be in that vehicle at all times just in case. Looking forward to a fun project instead of one I hate for a change.

Having worked on many that came thru the shop, I can pretty much guarantee that you will come up with a name for her... :D

Hopefully, you got one of the two good ones.
