A buddy of mine just bought a 1988 Ford School Bus (yellow of course) for $500. 6.6 diesel, auto tranny, A/C (that works) and it has a wheel chair lift (he says it will help him load his tools with zero strain).
Just had full service and the tranny had been rebuilt less than 2k miles ago. It has 200k on the clock, but has all new brakes, radiator, fluids, etc. It was the best of the five that were up for auction. He's going to strip out all the seats and make it an RV/work shop type vehicle to replace his M109 shop vehicle that he sold recently. It holds more, runs on diesel and is 'urban camo' without a doubt.
He said that the guy that helped him with his said they were getting ready to auction off another thirty five of them. When he was talking to one of the maintenance guys at the college he's going for a nurses degree for, he was shocked to hear that their school district was getting ready to auction off over 100 of these school buses.
Apparently, the Cash For Clunkers also included NEW SCHOOL BUSES as part of that stimulus. So maybe a school district near you might have some coming up for cheap soon.
