This is the sort of addition that can done on the cheap. Even if money is tight, you can still keep improving your gear.

I know this may sound silly to some but I keep some denim iron on patches in my sewing kit. Before everyone asks me where i'll get an iron in an emergency situation, i'll just say that a hot rock works just as well. Things don't always rip on the seam, so it's fairly quick and makes a great patch for a tent.

Get many needles, a rotating size hole puncher and waxed thread. That waxed thread works great on holding knots and doing repairs in canvas and leather...so some shoe repair is possible as well.

I also keep a spool of artificial senew in my BOB. It's waterproof and incredibly strong, I've never been able to break it.

I picked up my spool of artificial senew at a hobby shop and still have lots of it left. Like I said, the stuff just doesn't break. I've been meaning to see just how much weight it will take to break it, just havent gotten around to it yet. I may get a few more spools just in case. I know it will hold up a tarp as a tent pretty good, and makes light weight lanyards for flashlights and knives.
