Uh Huh. Nice list. Now put that all on a scale and tell me the weight and then the cost!
We all can pull up internet lists to copy and paste which is made all the more obvious as it talks about "see Tab for suggestions." The real purpose here is see what is actually working for some one. Something they have actually put together and practiced with. Hypothetical does no good.[/quote] Lol...I appreciate your mountainman picture and your comments about downloading lists from the internet. You should see a me in my buckskins...I've got the full setup including, mocs, headresses from several animals and all of but dang that stuff is hot during the Summer. Calico shirts are more comfortable. Yes I have the period correct shelters and other amenities just so that I don't appear disingenuous. God help the man who is found to have something with velcro or plastic buttons. I prefer antler myself. Yeah I've done the rendezvous/pow wow thing for years. I'v thrown hawks and knives at playing cards mounted on rounds of made of some felled tree, scrimshawed horn, made canteens out of goards, tanned leather, made pouches out of said leather, built traps and snares, started fires with flint and still and sent ball out of my McCoy percussion rifle down range to hit a pie tin....and told stories around a campfire while enjoying some beer can chicken and dutch oven cobbler....seriously. Now where were we....oh, your comments about my list and whether or not it was hypothetical. First, I've spent a fair amount of time in the bush not including the aforementioned mountainmen get-togethers. Nothing on my list is 'hypothetical'. It's all been tested and used in the field. My listings are all in Excel workbooks with links to other tabs within that same workbook. Frankly that is an efficient way to manage items. Yes I have tabs for lots of things(Animals, Books, Barter Goods, EDC, BOB, BOV, BOL, Comm, Documentation, Firearms/Ammo, First Aid, Food, Hygiene, Meds, NBC, etc. some of which are carry overs from say tools on Survivalblog.com and others are self made through years of pouring through sites, books and experience. If you think this is 'cut and paste' then you are clueless to the amount of time I have put into prepping. Think about it, with some clever formulas, you can alocate items across several sheets and know cumulatively what you have of something on a summary(Parent) worksheet. It's all in my pack and yes it all gets a little heavy but I still manage to get a few miles before I have to take a break....I'd include pictures but what's the point. The point of my list wasn't about cost but more about covering key ingredients. How you do that and where you build in redundancy is up to you. For some, cost is a critical consideration so they will stay away from a Steripen and opt for iodine tablets. It really doesn't matter as long as you are comfortable with what you have, how to use it and know that in a SHTF situation, it will serve you well. I'm the first to admit that I don't care about cost and I like to try different items and when new stuff comes out, I am interested in how it performs but if I can drop my primitive striker in favor of a nanostriker and shave off a few ounces I do because ounces = pounds and pounds = pain. Yeah....the Marines helped me understand that in a way only it or other branches of the military can do. As part of a MAG I have the unique opportunity to provide insight into Pros and Cons of different items I accumulate so that others can (hopefully) make better informed decisions. Coincidentally, I have a class scheduled next Saturday the topic of which is...you guessed it...Bug Out Bags. I'll be sure to share your thoughts.... Sunday through Tuesday I'll be taking an Off Grid Medical Course where I can improve my IV administration, suturing and other SHTF ways of managing the injured and infirm. I'll be sure to report back on that hypothetical knowledge as well. Peace and Semper Fi |

Great. Thanks for clearing up your expertise. Im sure you can understand my previous scepticism. How about posting up those referred to tabs since you have them easily available,Id be very interested in seeing them. Id still love to hear the weight? Total cost? And the pics would help people understand how someone gets all the stuff in to a pack or on their person for a bugout. (as a teacher Im sure you understand the importance of pictures when educating. I figure that you are teaching the bug-out bag class?) Like where does the Crusader Shotgun with tube fit? Do you pack it in the backpack or along side of it. If next to the pack how does that work out for you with the sleep system and therm-a-rest pad? Does the packsafe cover this entire package or just the backpack? Love the pack safe by the way ! Never thought I would leave my gear unattended during a bugout situation but its a scenario I can consider now. I must say that I am envious though because for me...... MONEY IS A CONSIDERATION. Lets see.... Crawford survival staff $295 Just In Case Shotgun $360 Steiner predator binoculars $160 Garmin Rino 530Hcx $400 (why this and three other radios and another gps?) Suunto gps $350-600 which model do you recommend? SolarGorilla/Shirpa 120 Explorer Solar ($210 for laptops under 40 watts and it can even charge your mobile phone, iPod, or handheld games consoles) Camp Stove MSR XGK EX Extreme with multifuels ($149.95) Currency - Small denominations at least $100/day (since most bugout bags are considered at least a 72hr pack = $300) Arc'teryx - LEAF Tango Expedition backpack ($575 -$600) only 9 items from the list totaling $2799.95 - $3074.95 That doesn't even scratch the surface of all the other very tacticool clothing and gear. I am looking forward to seeing the other tabbed lists you referred to as well. Your household preps must be awe inspiring. With a bug out bag like this I can only imagine what all of your other preps must be like. edited to correct typos Last edited by nwoutdoors on Thu Feb 02, 2012 5:20 pm, edited 3 times in total.
